I have been hanging around here for a few weeks now, and just love this site. It is by far the most supportive and least judgemental place for WLS support on the net. So, I had my first consult with my surgeon on Monday (2/22). They decided to have me do a 3 month supervised diet, just because the formal program requirements are so vague in my insurance company policy. The wonderful insurance lady from their office called my insurance company today, and other than the psych eval, and this 3 month diet, I am good to go... for the Band or RNY :sad0:, neither of which I want.

I posted on another thread that i live in Oregon, but we have insurance through BCBS North Dakota, from my hubby's job. They are covering the sleeve, but the catch is that you have to have it done at a facility in North Dakota. So, it is 1020 miles from here to there, plus lodging, etc. I could probably work it out so I do all of my preop stuff here, and then have the aftercare covered by my PCP. Since its a "pilot program", I would probably have to participate in studies and tons of other stuff in North Dakota. I could stay here and figure out how to come up with $16,000. Ok, I am done whining now. I just have to figure out how to get this done. I have 3 months of dieting, ahead of me:angry:, and hopefully by then we will have a plan.

I traveled out of state for my surgery. It wasn't bad at all. Don't lose hope - I am sure you can work something out. Let us know what you learn about their requirements. We have some pretty smart Cookies here - I bet we can come up with some options for you.

Kelkie,

I am going to Mexico for mine in about a month. My insurance won't even CONSIDER it. Cost is 10,000.

Thank you. I am going to look into it, either way. The mexico thing is not an option for me at all, I just don't have that kind of money and no options for borrowing it either. I am going to do some calling next week to find out what I would have to do to get this done. As soon as I know what the requirements are I will post it here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
