dealing with a breakup, stress and a stall

Recommended Posts

Things had been going so well with my sleeve -- tomorrow is 8 weeks out for me, and I'm 38 pounds since surgery -- but my boyfriend and I broke up last Monday and I am finding it really hard to deal without food. It does not help that I am working in Alaska right now and everyone I love is on the East Coast. I don't really have a support system here.

I'm so annoyed with myself and scared that I am going to ruin the chance the sleeve is giving me. Before the breakup, I had been perfect in staying between 600-800 calories. This past week, I slipped up daily and added a glass of wine here, a piece of chocolate there, an extra cheese snack here, bringing me to 900 or over. It is making me even more depressed to imagine that I am going to screw my sleeve up too!

I wish I could say I had gotten away with it, but I got on the scale at the gym today and I actually showed a gain of a pound!

I know I just need to get back to basics but my lord it is so hard to be alone in the house and not self-soothe with food and wine.

Thanks for listening.

You CAN do this. Your sleeve is a tool, a guide, you already know what to do. Try hanging out here as much as possible, we are always here to help. I live a highly stressful life, we own multiple businesses and there is always STRESS. I am 3 months out and have lost 46 pounds. Its hard beginning a new life without food as an emotional crutch. But it can and is done by a lot of people. I had an abscess a month after my surgery, had to go back into surgery to have that drained then had to pack it 2 times a day for weeks. It was a tough road. I still struggle daily with not really being able to eat, I MISS IT! I'm trying to find other things to fill my time, but it ain't easy. You'll find your way, feel free to read my blog or Private Message me if you need any other questions I'll be glad to help!!

I am so sorry to hear about the breakup and stress. I hope you get some healing soon. In the meantime, my suggestion would be to come up with a list of non-food related things that you can do/be to help you deal with this hurt. Take a bath, take a walk, go shopping (careful with this one;), etc.

I know how you feel. I was pretty upset when my bf and I broke up. You just have to concentrate on getting skinny and being able to wear cute clothes.

Going to the gym is the best way to deal with stress.

Do you have any hobbies? I know that pre-surgery whenever I wanted to snack, I would pick up my knitting. You can't knit and eat food at the same time! :biggrin0:

Thanks, everyone! I took your advice and have hit the gym every day, which feels awesome. Today is my 8-week mark, and I showed a 3 pound loss, which means I'm down 41 pounds!!! While I still miss my bf, I have to stay focused and know that I will be better than all right!

I haven't seen my bf who broke my heart last August, but I'd love to see him while I am out on a date with someone else, now that I am a size 8!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
