maxcat 0 Posted February 19, 2010 Is Fibromyalgia considered a contraindication for not having gastric bypass and does the sleeve do anything for Fibromyalgia? Thanks
Tiffykins 673 Posted February 19, 2010 I think it would be determined by what type of medications a patient has to take with Fibromyalgia. With RNY or the Band, you can't take NSAIDs. With the sleeve, you can take any medication because the stomach is a normal, but smaller, fully-functioning stomach.
BonitaChica 1 Posted February 19, 2010 I am a smaller patient, although still considered obese, and will be getting the sleeve on March 4. I have fibro which makes it very hard for me to lose weight which further aggravates the fibro and has caused sleep apnea. My fibro dr and the bariatric surgeon both think that wls will greatly improve my quality of life by helping me to reduce weight and potentially eliminate the sleep apnea and dimenish a lot of my fibro symptoms. They both cautioned against the band as a fibro patient b/c they didn't know how my body would react to a longterm foreign substance in my body. They also thought they the fills could lead to flare-ups. Their thinking is that with the sleeve once I'm healed and regulated that's basically all the adjusting my body will do. One flair as opposed to a series of flares. Just my opinion and those of my doctors though.
