FitatFifty 11 Posted February 19, 2010 Anyone out there with Celiac disease who has been sleeved? Interested to hear your story and/or challenges.
Lee 19 Posted February 19, 2010 I got the sleeve because my mom had celiac and doc thought it was my best option. It's what I wanted anyhow. I think I'm in first stages of celiac but don't have any info for you.
FitatFifty 11 Posted February 20, 2010 Thanks Lee. Did your doctor recommend the sleeve for you because of the possiblity of Celiac? Catherine (aka FitatFifty)
Lee 19 Posted February 20, 2010 Yes Catherine, that was a main concern along with others. I've had Rheumatoid Arthritis and couldn't take the meds should I ever need them again in the future, if I had the RNY. I had no interest in RNY, it was either sleeve or a long lifetime of major dieting.
bewitched 16 Posted February 22, 2010 I've had wheat and milk sensitivities for years. It wasn't until after the sleeve that we (my doc and I) realized that I have celiac. I had chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain since surgery. It was the gluten in my food. I've stopped eating all gluten and my other intolerances and I have improved greatly. My surgery was August 20, 2009. I've lost 90 pounds since then and 110 since the start of the process.

eggellis 0 Posted September 9, 2010 Hello. I am in the process of scheduling the sleeve. I have celiac sprue as well as soy and nut allergies and am concerned because the high Protein Drinks required after surgery contain soy and wheat. Any ideas on alternatives? Thank you! FitatFifty 11 Posted September 11, 2010 I haven't had any issues with gluten in proterin drinks, and the pre-mixed drinks typically have the allergens listed, Have you looked an Unjury products? I really like them...they are not as sweet as others. You can order a sample pack from thier website. Also, I am using Worldwide Protein Shakes, and I don't believe they contain soy. I'm sure you'll find the products you need. The websites usually have good infomration about the products. Fit

salty91 0 Posted September 11, 2010 I have Celiacs and my surgery will be in dec. The only problem I have had so far is that many of the Protein Shakes have gluten in them. The muscle milk products are gluten free and lactose free they are great
FitatFifty 11 Posted September 12, 2010 Worldwide Protein Shakes do contain soy. Sorry for the misinformation! Fit
FitatFifty 11 Posted September 12, 2010 Bewitched- I'm so happy for you that your Celiac was diagnosed. There's nothing worse than the chronic diarrhea and feeling generally pretty awful. I've been on the gluten free diet for seven years and am doing great. Well, maybe a little too great--but the sleeve will help with that!!! Fit

Stacies1 1 Posted April 27, 2011 I am scheduled in June for surgery and wondering of those out there with Celiac, have you had trouble getting enough foods with Proteins or with gluten free diets since the surgery?
