Losing pounds, but not sizes... Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Not sure if this is a dumb question, but I couldn't find it anywhere, so I thought I'd throw it out there for your wit and wisdom!

I have (as of today) already lost 17 pounds since surgery, which is awesome (was sleeved 15 days ago). I know a lot of this weight loss is just the initial jump-start from basically having no real "food". However, with 17 lbs gone, my pants and such all still fit the same, no change in inches, etc. This is odd to me, as with my band, I lost quite a bit early on, and the sizes melted away.

Any thought on what might be happening here? I've started to walk for 30+ minutes a few days a week again (as I did before surgery), which I have decided is good for me, regardless of the "weight". Nonetheless, could there be something going on that I'm not "losing" size or inches, but just pounds? And, should I expect something to "shift" all of a sudden, and is this how things go with the pounds sometimes? Can I magically wake up a size smaller one day? (LOL, I know, I wish.)

Anyways, hope you're all well, and I look forward to your insights.:smile::smile:

Bloating from surgery can affect the sizes/inches early on.

And, yes you can wake up one day and be down a size. I went from a size 14 to a size 10. Somehow I skipped right over 12s. I realized my 14s were getting super saggy in the hiney, and thighs. Went and bought a couple of 12s, and they were too big. I had to get 10s, and then just a couple of weeks later I was getting into junior 9 skinny jeans. It was kind of crazy.

i have pretty much done the same thing as tiffy. i haven't really lost much weight like in the beginning but my clothes feel and look so different. everyday people look at me and say how much more have you lost and i have to say i am hanging around 62#. i guess the inches are shifting all over the body. well good luck. we are all going at different speeds. some days i wish it would just fall off in 3-4 months but i know that is not realistic. i didn't put 140# on overnight, but it sure would be nice for it to fall off. wish i had some insight as to what i am doing wrong. everyday i say i am going to stay away from carbs but by the end of the day i have to have something. blah blah blah... sorry for the rambling..

Thanks to you both for the insights. I was hoping that it was still "post-surgery bloat" or something. I know things will catch up with themselves, it's just the weirdest thing to lose so many pounds, and no inches.

Laura... you'll make it girl! It's hard sometimes, and I've been there, so I know how you feel. Hang in there, and just do your best. That's all you can ask of yourself.

Youknowit, I am the same way! I was sleeved on 2/5/10 and the scales say I have lost 15 pounds, but my clothes do not fit differently at all! I hope it is the surgery weight (whatever that is) and I'll drop sizes quickly all of a sudden :)

I was sleeved 12/22/09... I have lost 46 pounds as of today. But all my clothes fit just fine still. The only rationale I've been able to come up with is that I was wearing my clothes way, way too tight to begin with, so now I'm actually a size 22/24, where I was probably more of a 28 to begin with. Congrats on your weightloss so far!

Keep in mind that everyone's body types are different...My mom is an 'apple' shape where she holds her weight in her abdomen area...it took her a little while to notice size changes, but when she did...it was dramatic...I on the other hand am more of a 'pear' shape, hold my weight in my massive thighs & hips...lol so though my waist is shrinking, my thighs are just hangin on to all that flippin flab...lol...I've went down a few sizes but initially at 20 pounds..I was still in the same size. Now 45#'s down, I'm a few sizes down...and Tiffy is right, right after surgery your gonna be bloated for a few weeks till all that gas works itself out.

Great words of advice, and insights, all! Thanks so much. We are all different, and with time, things will fall into place. :001_smile::smile::smile:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
