Hey MWG, are you going to China? I went because I wanted to hike the Great Wall. Even at 100 pounds overweight, it was one of the best days of my life. My son and I just couldn't believe how gorgeous it was. We hated the food in Bejing until we found the Embassy district and a good Italian restaurant. Chinese food in China isn't what it is here in the USA. I just wanted to go to the Great Wall and do Tai Chi in the park with the seniors. I didn't learn any Chinese before I went. I didn't need to speak to communicate with the elders. I found it much easier to learn Japanese before going to Japan.

I would love to go someday. I had planned to teach ESL in China after I graduate from college (this May), but used my sleeve as a way to talk myself out of going....... I love to travel, but I am also a big homebody and I love being around my family (and fiance). I studied abroad in Wales Fall 2008, so that was my big travel experience so far, and while there I realized how much emphasis there is in other countries to speak another language fluently (besides English). That's the main reason I'm taking Chinese now. I have taken Spanish, French, German, and Welsh, and yet I am only fluent in English. So while I'm graduating soon I hope I can keep taking Chinese classes somewhere. Did you do the Tai Chi?! That would be fun! I hope to see the Great Wall someday too and I also want to visit Guilin, it's the city with the cone-shaped limestone rock formations. Google image it because I can't really explain! I'm curious, did you take Japanese classes or use Rosette Stone or something like that? I initially would have preferred Japanese but my college doesn't offer it. But now am glad I'm taking Chinese - you kinda get attached! :cursing:

Hi MWG, I'm not the language pro in my house. My son speaks seven languages so it's a lot of fun to travel with him. I used Pimsleur for Japanese and also use it to brush up on my Spanish. Travel is definitely my passion. After college, my son taught school in Thailand, then S. Korea so we traveled a lot in Asia those couple of years. I feel done with Asia and ready to see more of Eastern Europe. Last summer we did Russia. In Asia, Japan remains my favorite, though the people in Cambodia were amazing.

I hope you get to see China one day and yes, I'd been doing Tai Chi with a teacher from China and wanted to go experience it first hand. I stopped doing it when I fractured my ankle in 2007 and I'm really looking forward to getting back into it post-op. I can only imagine how much more fun things will be weighing 100 pounds less!

This made me laugh. A lot. :scared0: And by the way, Thin, I know you said you're trying to steer clear of carbs, but toast is actually on my "allowed" list, starting with soft solids.

Thin, thanks for the first laugh of the morning. Did you happen to see the Wanda Sykes - I'ma Be Me special on HBO? There's one part that is seriously to die laughing when she talks about her stomach Ester. EsterRoll. I think I have to keep it on my TiVo forever so that I can watch that one bit if I need to laugh. I'm a gonna name my new tummy Ester unless something else strikes me because Ester will keep me entertained forever!

Tell bossy lady "Asian food doesn't always agree with me. The last time I ate Chinese, I hurled and I sure hope I don't this time... By the way, can I sit next to you?? " My guess is that BL will avoid you like the plague.

;)

So, here's the update! Bossy/nosey lady took a poll from people she knows and came up with a list & reviews of like 6 different restaurants. She asked which one we thought sounded best. Me, being so subtle, said the sit-down-and-order-off-a-menu place sounded good. And she went for it! Luckily, I found a MENU online! Woot! http://www.menupix.com/menupdf/GreatChinaCarry1115.pdf I looked it over, did some research on some of the things to see if there were any Entrees without sauce because I reasoned with myself that I could do as Tracy suggested, order the huge meal, and then I will have yummy Chinese leftovers for a few days! I've narrowed it to moo goo gai pan or shrimp with lobster sauce, depending how I feel that day. Although I'm sure it varies, I found a cool site that gives some nutrition info for some of the more popular Chinese-American dishes (and is what helped me narrow down my choice). Chinese Food: A Wok On The Wild Side

Ultimately, I decided if I skip the rice, I should be okay with one of those choices. I'm going to skip appetizers, and no drink, of course! Then I will be more comfortable not having to dodge questions from Bossy/Nosey Lady ;) and I will have leftovers! I'm "allowed" to eat pretty much (within reason of course) whatever I want now, and am only eating 1/4c. per meal, which leaves me full! So if I keep the carbs + fat + cals as low as possible, I think I'll have a yummy, fun lunch! Any input on this?? Am I making a mistake?

Sounds like you are making good choices. Enjoy! (And put Bossy Lady in her place!)

MidwestGirl,

you're putting the time in to research and make good healthy choices. Shrimp is a great source of protein...take it easy on the sauce as most is made with tons of cornstarch (high carb).

Now just go and enjoy your great choices!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
