I'm gagging over here!

Recommended Posts

I swear, I can't take one more drop of Protein Shakes. I've tried mixing them with little liquid, lots of liquid, different brands. I can't find anything that I like.

I'm trying to drink nectar strawberry Kiwi right now & just opening it to drink is making me gag.

I'm allowed to start purees tomorrow. Any suggestions for high Protein that does not involve Protein powder??? :thumbup1:

I made my own shake today. I will post the recipe later. I am like you-I am gagging over the things that I originally loved. This one was decent and had a good amount of Protein in it. After my 1 year old goes down for his afternoon nap I will post it.

Alright, here it is. You can play with it to make it is thin or thick as you want it. In the stage I am in, I made it pretty thin.

Peanut Butter and banana smoothie

350 cal and 20 gm of Protein (Cal count is high, but for how little I am eating, I figured I could splurge)

1/3 cup powdered skim milk

1/2 cup Water

3 crushed ice cubes (I did more like 8)

1 tsp imitation vanilla (I did 1/2 tsp)

1 pkg artificial sweetener (I skipped it. I hate artificial sweetener!)

2 tbsp creamy Peanut Butter

1/2 banana

Blend nonfat milk with Water. Add peanut butter and blend until smooth. Add remaining ingredients. Blend until smooth. Makes one cup.

I thought this one sounded good too, but I didn't try it.

Peach smoothie

95 cal and 8 gm of Protein

6 oz 100 percent peach nectar or juice

1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese

Blend well. Strain if necessary to remove any unblended pieces. Makes 2 1/2 cup servings.

pineapple smoothie

90 cal and 7 gm of protein per serving

6 oz 100 percent pineapple juice

1/2cup low fat cottage cheese

Blend well. Strain if necessary to remove any unblended pieces. Makes two 1/2 cup servings.

I too am having problems getting in my Protein. I was drinking banana cream Protein shakes for Breakfast before surgery. Now, I can NOT stand them. I am one week out from being sleeved and am down 16 pounds. The doctor told me today to add reduced fat Peanut Butter to my shakes. He also said I could blend a very ripe banana in them also. One receipe I can't wait to try is using vanilla Protein adding just a little instant Decaf coffee to it and I also got sugar free carmel flavoring. I bet it will taste like a caramel frappacino. I am up for any ideas to spice up these protein shakes!! You may also look into getting different flavoring extracts to change the taste. Try adding mint extract to your chocolate shakes. I bet it will take like mint chocolate. Just a thought, my mom and I have been thinking of different ideas today, just haven't tried them all. Sorry I am just rambling on and on. It makes me feel better that I am not the only one that is having trouble getting in all the protein.

Best of luck to you on your WL journey. Keep me posted if you come up with any other protein ideas.

Look for soy slender in the store. It's soy milk not in the fridge, on the shelf in the grocery store. It has some Protein in it. Also K20 Protein Water has some protein in it.

have you been to egg face's web site? She has all sorts of Protein Drink recipes.

Mini,

It sounds like you are on "full liquids" which is odd, so soon after surgery. Have you tried the Protein bullets? I just found a Grape Flavored one at Target and some fruit Punch at Walmart, tastes like Koolaid. They are both considered Clear liquids. I cut them with Water, drink down about 2 oz of a water bottle, then put in the bullet, flavored, high Protein Water, voila.

Hope this might help!

I was on full liquids the day I was released from the hospital. Every doctor does things different I guess.

I totally feel your pain! After weeks on Protein Shakes, I now find the only thing I don't have to force down is the pre-made Isopure drinks. They are in a bottle and have over 40grams of Protein. They are not as cheap as the powders, but they are clear and come in a lot of flavors. I was given the Grape Frost in the hospital and like it OK - tastes like watered down grape Kool-Aid. But my favorite is the pineapple Orange Banana. I bought that flavor in the powder too, but I'm going to take it back and exchange for a case of the ready-made. The powder is cloudy and just yucky tasting to me, but others may like it. The Vitamin Shoppe will let you return any of their items for a full refund if you don't like them, and their prices are better then GNC (at least in my area).

I don't have any real suggestions to offer but just wanted to say I know exactly what you are feeling. I still have 2 weeks of full liquids and I am so sick of sweet flavors. I swear this has probably broken my sweet tooth once and for all. I drink broths but there isn't enough Protein in there to really do it so I am choking down the Protein Drinks until the day comes I can say "so long forever!!!!"

Thanks for the suggestion. We don't have the Vitamin Shoppe here, but we do have GNC. I had my son run out and get me some. I have Alpine Punch and Grape Frost in the fridge chilling now. I'm am PRAYING this works!!!!!

Yesterday at my post-op appt. the surgeon said to start on mushies! I ran home and made a scrambled egg and thought I'd never had anything so good in my life. I couldn't finish it, but it was so satisfying. I don't think I have alot of choices on my mushies list, but I'll take anything over a Protein Shake. Just now I ate some refried Beans and it was just like eating a burrito. I managed almost 1/4 cup and stopped because I'm deathly afraid of over filling my sleeve. I know I'll have to supplement with a shake eventually since I'm not eating enough Protein, but for now I'm enjoying every bite!

I was Clear Liquids for 2 days, full liquids for 7 and told I could move to puree on day 9. I am on that for 7 days then move to "Mechanical Soft, Mushy" for 14 days. Then, I start working on soft foods and moving to more solid foods.

But, the great news is that I just tried to Frosted Grape. While there is a bit of an aftertaste, it is very tolerable and I haven't gagged once!!!!! It actually tastes like I tried to make Kool-Aid from Pixie-Sticks. Anyone remember trying to make those as a kid? :wink1:

Well, I am just going to admit it. I am weak and not getting enough food. Today I made really smooth mashed potatoes. They were thin and I ate 5 bites. Probably more of a mushy food, but I feel fine. I am on full liquids for 3 weeks and I am 2 weeks into that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
