Hands down : Homemade chicken salad

1 small chicken breast, boiled in chicken broth with black pepper

Light Miracle Whip (I like mine to be pretty "wet")

Hard-boiled egg minced up into tiny pieces

I tried the pre-packaged chicken and tuna salad and didn't really like them. So, I made mine at home.

Pickles didn't settle with me well early out. I ended up burping them up later in the day. It was quite icky.

2nd favorite was pinto Beans (mushed up) with light sour cream, and 2% cheese. I didn't like refried Beans out of the can. So, I bought the small bag of beans, and boiled them then mushed them up with a fork, and added sour cream and cheese until the consistency and taste was just right.

I only cooked like 1/4 of the bag of beans at a time, and that lasted me for 3-6 meals.

I am on soft foods, and will be until next Friday. So far I like the tuna salad cups- esp. the lemon pepper. I am one of the few who likes eggs. I like refried Beans, and I really like this dish from the eggface website:

Shelly's Baked Ricotta

8 oz of Ricotta cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan

1 large Egg, beaten

1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning

salt & pepper to taste

1/2 cup Marinara Sauce

1/2 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese

Mix ricotta cheese, parmesan, beaten egg, seasonings together and place in a oven proof dish. Pour marinara on top and top with mozzarella cheese. Bake it in the oven @ 450 for about 20-25 minutes (best) or nuke it till hot and bubbly. I usually made it first in the oven and heated the leftovers in the microwave.

I don't put mine in the oven- Too long, and just nuke it in the microwave.

I liked cooking ground turkey, adding a little bit of taco seasoning (I don't like it really spicy) mixing in sour cream and cheddar cheese.

Another favorite of mine is Greek yogurt. If you don't get the flavored kind, you can mix in sugar free Jello or sf syrups, with a little splenda or stevia. Greek yogurt has double the Protein of other yogurts and half the carbs.

This stuff counts as mushies??? I guess I need to re-read my post op diet. I'm still on my last days of clears but now I'm really looking forward to mushies if this is the case? I thought it was all about yogurt, watered down grits, watery mashed potatoes, etc. I sure didn't expect meat of any sort, pureed or not. Kewl! Tiff, how ya doin??

Actually bean or meat based mushies are the best things to eat during the soft foods stage.

Mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, oatmeal, grits etc are all very high in carbohydrates and will stall your weight loss without giving you the Protein your body needs for healing. Don't get me wrong, they go down easily, but you have to be prepared for the carb craving they will set off.

Beans are high carb but also have alot of Fiber and some protein to offset the carbs.

I know this has a lot of sodium, but I love Deviled Ham in the small cans! I just eat it with a spoon since I can't have crackers yet. I know it would be much better for me to take my own ham and blend it up really fine. But sometimes I just need a big boost of flavor, and this works for me. I only eat a few spoonfuls at a time anyway. Luckily I don't have any blood pressure issues, so I'm not staying away from all sodium.

The refried Beans sound great and so do the sweet potatoes. I checked my diet today and I can't have tuna until my 4th week, chicken and turkey on 5th week and ground beef on 6th week. I might try mashed califlower instead of potatoes. I was thinking about some baby food. Anybody try baby food?

Right- Dr. Aceves had us do 10 days of clear liquid and 10 days of full liquids. That is nearly 3 weeks before we moved to mushie foods and I am pretty sure we could have soupy meat. It's been over 9 months ago for me, so I can't really remember the full list of what mushie foods he told us to have.

I am pretty sure chicken salad and ground meat were on the list because I can remember eating a lot of that. Everyone's doctor has a different post op diet, so hopefully your doctor gave you a list.

Depends on your particular rules, for some this doesn't count as a mushie, but I would make egg beaters scrambled eggs (only like 1/4 c) w about 1/4 of cottage cheese cooked in and then they were super soft and went down easily and had lots of Protein.< /p>

I tried babyfood. I bought a bunch of organic baby food in jars and ended up donating it to a local church's foodbank. I did eat some of it though, mainly the fruit, added to yogurt or warm Cereal. I add a scoop of Protein powder from Solgar (whey to Go) vanilla bean to Uncle Bens "Healthy Grain" cream of wheat-1 packet=7gms Protein. I still use only half packet but with the level scoop of vanilla whey powder whisked in, it adds an additional 16gm of protein.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
