My husband is freaking me out! (My surgery date is 2/5/10). His main concern is that I'll go through all of this and then gain all the weight back. Anybody got a good answer I can give him? Anybody got any statistics?:confused1:

I've never heard of anybody who gained all the weight back and I've been reading this forum for 6 months.

I've never read about anyone regaining all of their weight back. There are some stories on OH where a few patients gain back 5-10lbs, but not all of their weight loss.

I'm not sure if you've seen these links, but here are several 2 and 3 year patient stories that may help.

Remember any of the WLS can be sabotaged by our eating habits, and lifestyle. It's a choice to make it work. I'm not implying that you have to diet for the rest of your life, but you do have to use the sleeve as a tool. For me, having surgery was the only way that I could get my habits in check, and change my relationship with food.

Its all relative. This is the BEST surgery with the best stats. Thats just the way it is. I agree weight regain is ALWAYS a concern. But this one has the least regain.

You may indeed regain some weight after losing a lot, but it will be relatively little and it will be extremely easy to take it right back off.

Right now you probably only notice weight gains of 10-30lbs. After the surgery and weight loss, you will notice gains of 1-3lbs and you will have an extremelly effective tool at taking it right back off.

Yes, you can eat around your weight loss surgery and sabotage yourself, so if that happens it is time to see a head doctor to help.

Bypass, has really given WLS a bad perception, since so many had it and regained, but this surgery doesn't have nearly the same regain statistics as the old ones.

I am just starting on my journey and have been researching for months. Just switched surgeons and procedure from the band to the sleeve because it IS covered my Medicare. I have been married for 36 years and I think telling your husband statistics is not really the issue. He needs to support you no matter what!

Hi Grateful, well what i told my hubbie when he threw that comment in my face was "It's really too bad you have no confidence in me, really sad" and left it at that. . he never again has told me anything about my weight. . after he saw how much of my original stomach was going to be gone, i guess he realized that gaining your weight back in nearly impossible. . maybe about 10 lbs or so, but not all 100 + lbs. . . that is impossible I think. . plus after spending so much money, time, and effort who would want to do that? Go figure? Men are so one tracked. . . good luck

Thanks to all of you for the comments. To his credit dh has seen me go up and down so many times. And to top it off he told me of a women he works with that got "stapled" a few years ago and is now bigger than ever! I told him that his coworker's "stapling" was much different than the VSG. He's ok. Just knows I am going through some tough weeks ahead and wants to be sure it's worth it. I assured him it will be. And BTW I've been married to him 40 years so he knows me well:)

My sis is almost 3 years post op and NO probs, no regaining!! With the sleeve it is VERY rare to gain back, it is the best one to get according to my research! I know you feel like crap today - it will get better. My surgery is on Feb 16th, I am just 11 days behind you!!

I am happy to hear all that, although I know people who have gained all their weight back with bypass and Band. I was just watching Carnie Wilson on TV. She lost 150 and gained 90, UGH. You do wonder who you can do that after working so hard but I have lost and gained 100 pounds probably about 20 times in my life. My doctor tole you can gain it all back by stretching the stomach every time you eat. I see by reading this forum that support is the most important thing. When I was going to be banded, I was on that forum for a couple months talking to people and one guy said, "I don't need my stomach banded, I need my HEAD banded". vecause really that is what it is all about. I have been married 36 years and I so know IT IS NOT ABOUT HIM!

Tiffy, this is a fabulous list of posts. Is there a way that we can make the list a sticky? I'd like to be able to come back and read it over and over if/when I get to a stall. It's all so motivational!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
