Diabetes and The Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I am curious if there is anyone else out there with Type II Diabetes that can answer this question. Does the Diabetes disappear after the surgery? I have heard it works well with the DS surgery, but I have heard nothing about the sleeve. Please, if you have answers ... share =)

Thanks,

Rob

Hello,

I'm not a doctor, nurse or diabetic, so I don't know the answer. In my support group I hear people share that their Type II Diabetes went away after surgery. My facility only does RNY, LapBand and now the Sleeve.

I just looked at your family pictures. Your children are adorable and you and your wife are a lovely couple. Wishing you much success on this journey to renewed health!

I don't have DM myself but I've read posts from a lot of diabetics who say it disappeared after their sleeve. My hypertension and depression disappeared after I lost about 50 lbs...no more meds. Boy, is that great! Good luck with losing your diabetes!!!

I am 2 weeks post-op and stopped taking all meds because my sugar levels where staying around 85-95 throughout the day until I started full liquids then had to start back on Lantus 40 unit 1 time a day, (long lasting insulin). More carbs and sugar in the Soups and yougert I guess. Will be adding in more exercise this weekend so hoping that will help.I sure like the fact that I don't have to take the crushed Metforman that made me gag it tasted sooooo bad:thumbdown:. My hope is to get off all meds as the wieght comes off, we'll see.

I've read several successful stories on obesityhelp stating that once patients dropped 50-75lbs their diabetes was completely resolved, and they were living med free with normal bs levels.

Within this presentation (Slide 18) it states 83% out of 1,000 patients over a 5 year time frame had resolution of their diabetes.

Well, I can tell you that I was on Metformin 1000mg 2x a day, Celebrex 200 mg 2x a day,

Glyburide 5 mg 1x a day & Lisonopril 40 mg 1x a day. I am currently not taking ANY of the above anymore. Now, I may need to start taking a low dose Metformin for a little while now that I am eating solids again, but I won't know that for another week or so. We are watching my sugars which are still the lowest they have been in over 10 years!!! It is a miracle, we just have to make sure we have learned our lessons and can keep it moving forward!

Thanks for the response MrNickSr...I am currently on Metaformin 2xsdaily, Minidiab(glipizide) now reduced to 1xdaily, and Actos 2xsdaily. Those are just my diabetes meds, not included are blood pressure, an acid reducer, and cholesterol meds LOL. Your words are incouraging. Thanks again!

Ohhh Brenda, I am SO NOT looking forward to crushed metaformin. I hate the taste when I am taking it whole LOL! Otherwise I am sure that the yogurt is the culprit in your increased b/s...it has always played a role in mine, so I eat it less often. Keep on keepin on, once the weight is off I am sure your DM will go completely away =)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
