So I am almost 2 weeks out and since I am now on home soft/pureed foods, I feel that I am obsessing over food even more than I did pre-op. I keep thinking about what I can make for dinner and if I can eat this or that. Does this crazy food obsession leave? What can I do to get over it?

Hi JC,

I'm still pre-op, so clueless but from what I've heard in support group meetings that I attend, they say to take up a craft or become an exerciser. Find a passion to replace the hours we used to spend thinking about food, planning food, cooking food and eating food. For me that's a lot of head time to fill. I think I'll probably be walking and reading more post-op.

That happened to me too, so don't worry, it does go away at the about the 3rd week. . . I was so obsessed it was stupid:angry:. . I'd fix my family these great meals and think "wow, I wonder if i could just taste a bit" but my good side always won, I never tasted anything. . . then after a while it was like "whatever" and I concentrated on myself. . . now I get the urge every now and then but ignore it and sip my Water instead and tell myself that I am not going to let fat possess me ever again. . . I am stronger than that and damn it, it's not going to win again! and I carry on day after day, it does get better, but you have to be willing to change it. . . good luck!

I can totally relate. While I was on clears and full liquids, I would dream I was eating "real" food and wake myself up chewing! Literally chewing air!

I am still somewhat obsessive because I need to plan out my meals - esp. for being at work. I am still trying to get all of my Protein in and my Water, but it is difficult. On Thursday, I go to "regular" food. I hope that will give me more latitude on what I can eat so I will feel less "obsessed".

I think once we are "in the groove" it will get much easier...

Good luck to you!!!

I'm about 7 weeks and I cook my family 3 meals a day now...NEVER done that before. I make their lunches, plan their Breakfast, and of course cook their supper. I have always enjoyed cooking and still prefer food network over any other channel, just because I love food doesn't mean I have to eat it---I just force others too--I bring more Cookies and cakes to work, I've taken up freezing leftovers and giving them to my grandmother and aunt...it works for me, I still exercise, but food can be a passion-not automatically an obsession.

It does get better, at least it did for me. The month or two it was because it was all new to me and I spent a lot of time thinking about and planning what I would/could eat. Like renebeau said, once I got "in the groove," I became less obsessive. Good luck through this phase!

I fully understand your plight! But, food has always been a big deal, and I have always loved to cook. But, six weeks in, I've become VERY organized with my meal planning, and I am constantly thinking of food. I think that DeeDee is totally right. Once we get our own routine going and feel comfortable with a variety of food choices, it won't be so bad. Or at least, I hope that's the case.

YES, it does get better, WE ALL had those same obsessions, dreaming of food, what can I eat? When can I eat? You name it, we've experienced it.

Now I'm 56 days out, only 4 days from 2 months. I don't think about food much, I can eat a Protein Bar and be just fine. I have things I throw in my lunch daily. Yogurt, Chili, Spaghetti sause with a tiny amount of Pasta, Fresh bananas, blue berries & cherries, Smooth Peanut Butter with 4 Ritz crackers. NOT all of this, just choices. I can eat Chili from Wendy's or 5 chicken nuggets, but that's about it.

I've had stuffed mushrooms at a resturant, or boild shrimp. I eat tilapia a lot, bacon wrapped shrimp, I tried a salad today, it was fine, just couldn't eat much of it.

It does get much better as you go. Just be patient, it will come.

yes it will leave. I experienced the same that early post operative. actually, I would call that curiosity. I was CURIOUS about testing my sleeve with all possible kind of food stuff. but when I was done, I no longer obsess at all.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
