What is everyone's exercise routine? New and long timers

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I was just wondering what everyone's exercise routine is these days. Do you mix cardio and weight/strength training? How many days a week are you doing it? For long timers, have you seen less loose skin depending on the exercising you're doing?

I was sleeved on Dec 21st and I got my gym membership on Dec 31st. I haven't been cleared for weights yet, so I'm strictly doing cardio. I'm up to an hour a day, 4-6 times a week.

I went ahead and put a goal in place for the spring (albeit a lofty one!!) and I'm participating in a half marathon (Rock and Roll Marathon of Dallas). I might not be able to finish it, but I'm going to try anyway!

Anyone else set exercise goals for this quarter?? This seems to be the key for my success in losing the weight and looking good while doing it. So I would love to hear what everyone else does.

I work out 4-5 days a week.

3 days a week I do isolated(front of the body, back of the body, then extremities smaller muscle groups) strength training.

1 day of intense cardio, and isolated core exercises.

I bowl on Wednesdays so that is my "down" day for working out.

I'm glad to report that my skin is snapping back much better now that I'm maintaining instead of losing.

I don't set goals for the gym. My personality doesn't do well with goals. I haven't been to the gym all week because my husband is on stand-by for Haiti. My mind nor my heart is just not into working out this week.

I do specific leg lifts (standing and laying down on the floor with weighted balls),squats, lunges and I haven been focusing on my legs lately since spring time is coming soon.

My favorite exercise for my butt, calves, and quads is to take my little 2x4 piece of wood, hang my heels off the edge of the wood, and then roll up on the ball of my feet kind of tippy toeing, clench my thighs and butt, hold for 5-8 seconds, and I do 3 reps of 12. It burns, and feels great. I do this and my ab/core workout 4 days a week.

I do not and will not work out on the weekends.

I do free weights/cardio at the same time 5 days a week. On the off days I just go for a bikeride or a stroll thru the park. :lol0:

I tap dance one day a week (not the most strenuous workout, but so much fun!) and Jazzercise 4 days a week (mostly cardio with light weights and core work). I usually take off Fridays and try to walk/Wii Fit on Sundays. I also try to use my ab ball a few times each week.

As for lose skin, mine is pretty bad. Just today in a dressing room they had four mirrors in the room and I got a wonderful look at my flapping butt and thighs...I started to giggle because of how bad it looked flopping all different directions (I started to kick and hop to see just how bad it was)...I'm sure they thought I was crazy. Some day I'll add more strength training into my workouts and hopefully that will help.

I do the eliptical machine 3 days a week, kickboxing once a week, body sculpting one day a week, and then line dancing (not very strenuous but fun) one day a week. I need to incorporate more weight strength training. I actually have an appt with my fitness trainer today and going to get her advice.

As far as a goal I also have one. I am doing a triathlon in the fall. I won't be in the top tier to finish but I don't want to be in the last tier either!!! I am goal oriented so this will help me stay on track. Great committment to sign up for the Marathon. For anyone that lives in Cincinnati there is a great event in May called the "Flying Pig Marathon". I don't live anywhere near Cincinnati but I am going to get one of their t-shirts- The shirts says "I will do a marathon when Pigs Fly!!!" Go to their web site it's great www.flyingpigmarathon.com

I got the gym habit way before wls.

I do a group power class 2 days a week which is a group weight lifting class. I do weight training

two days a week on my own. I definitely think this is the reason I don't have much loose skin. I had a lot of muscle before I had wls.

I also do cardio 6 days a week and Zumba at least twice a week.

You guys are awesome! My excuse is that have been working 12 hr days, 6 am to 6 pm, and when I get home I am beat, I know that this is just an excuse, if you really want something, you find a way..and for those who think they have sagging skin, be grateful you did this before you turned 50, because that is when you really start losing collegen, and wrinkles, sagging skin, bat wings, really are a reality, even without weightloss, even my skinny, in shape friends, who excersie and have never been overweight in the their lives have turkey necks and bat wings, even if they are little tiny bat wings...maybe that is where the term 'old bat' orginates from, JK...men get turkey necks too, so equal aging opportunity...I guess if you can afford plastics you never grow old, like Joan Rivers, but all her ugliness in on the side, you ladies are beautiful inside and out..maybe because we have all be so discriminated against our whole lives due to obesity, that we understand the pain and suffering, and have much more compassion for those who don't fit the mold of perfection. Keep up the good work ladies, you ROCK are awesome inside and out!.

Mondays and thursdays I do an hour boot camp session which involves various tortures like doing pushups with a soccer ball under one hand, cruel and unusual amounts of squatting and lunging and biggest loser type madness such as dragging tractor tyres and piling sand bags. I absolutely love it. We also mix in a lot of sprinting and very fast cardio in short bursts. That takes care of my strength training and interval cardio needs since I'd rather watch paint dry than go to the gym.

Three or four other days a week I do a nice relaxing run - usually between 6 and 10 kms depending on how much time i have, how I feel and what route I choose. bad weather is taken care of by my treadmill.

Usually at least one weekend morning I'll go for a long walk with DH to chat and catch up after our busy weeks. Eliza often joins us on her bike, but the boys just grunt from their beds.

Go on Youtube and put in zumba. It looks like so much fun but good cardio. I plan to take one at the back of the class bc I know I won't be able to finish the whole thing at first. One class does it with weights for some sculpting. Can't wait!

It's a blast. It's Latin dancing and whatever else the instructors choreograph.

Going on Utube to watch it is a good idea. They are allowed to do

70% Zumba songs and 30% instructors choice of songs..

Well I did my first Zumba class and what fun! Small problem at the start of theclass, some tmi, I've been really constipated lately and last night I had some fresh cherries. In the back of my mind I knew they can give me cramps and bm's but I figured no problem with nothing moving anyway. WRONG. Had to run to the bathroom twice and I was loving the class! Success!!! So will not eat cherries again but the instructor lets you watch her first and then do it for the neebies. Also some weights for upper body that kicks butt or should I say arms. Reminds me of jazzercise with latin music and moves. Definitely worth a try.

Three nights a week, I do the Gazelle for 45, yoga for 30, and calestentics (sp) for 15. Starting with the Gazelle warms the muscles for the other two. I have specific nights to exercise, so I don't feel guilty for not exercising on my off nights.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
