I am glad you didn't cheat. Well done! As was stated before, it's easy to slide downhill really fast once you do start slipping in things that aren't prescribed by your doc. I had to do a milk and yoghurt diet for 10 days twice! The first time at a BMI of 46 for my band op and then again at a BMI of around 30 (I think) for my revision to sleeve. I did stick to it rigidly both times but I did have the occasional oxo drink to get in some savoury as I hate yoghurt and it makes me feel sick. It was all worth it though and my liver was nicely shrunk down for surgery. Good luck, you're doing really well xxx

Thanks everyone. I am on day 6 and I am doing fine. I haven't cheated at all, but I did lick a french fry once. Ha! it just smelled SOOOOO good. Nothing other than that though. Oh, and I am down 12 lbs!

Her liver cracked during surgery and she was out of work for 8 weeks recovering!

I have never heard of a liver cracking? What does that mean exactly? I know the preop diet is to reduce the fat in the liver and make it more firm and less slippery so it's easier to deal with in surgery. Can you tell us more?:blushing:

If your liver is very fatty it can actually break open. The surgeon said she actually saw it break open as it was gently removed and then heal itself in front of her eyes. It was a very scary time, and the surgeon was very worried for a time for the patient. She had to stay longer in the hospital and was out of work for 8 weeks healing and the surgeon said it was because she didn't follow her preop diet as ordered. It's a very serious situation.

Hi, guys

today is the last day of a 14 day Protein shake liquid diet- I go in tomorrow to get sleeved  I'll be honest; reading post after post there is so much variety in how surgeons approach the pre op stage it was difficult to accept my 14 days of only shakes when I was reading about people allowed Jello, a small lean meal, etc. It was frustrating that I wasn't allowed anything besides the shakes, so yes I cheated 4 times, each with a bowl of Soup in which I drank about a cup of broth since I needed something salty. I want to say I felt bad but I didn't-- I find my particular surgeon is much too restrictive and should allow some clear fluids in the 2 week period. Either way I doubt the 4 cups of broth in 2 weeks will throw off my liver or prevent surgery. Just to let you know that for more restrictive pre op diets it CAN be more difficult but is possible.

Sleeve tomorrooooooow :)

(of course they might open me up and say oh no she obviously had 4 cups of broth, close her up again!)

I cheated a few times before my surgery, and it wasn't with broth...lol! My doctor also had a very restricted diet, and it was hard for me, so I slipped up a few times. When it came to my surgery, my doctor said my liver looked great, and he had no problems except for having to fix a hernia that I had at the same time. I'm not saying this will be the same for everyone, so be careful what choices you make!! I was terrified that I blew it for surgery, but just got lucky I guess.

Yaya, good luck tomorrow!! Keep us posted!

I am 3 weeks out from surgery and following a low carb, high Protein diet for one week. I haven't cheated yet and I dont plan to, reading this helped me realize that cheating is not an option!

Just an update to this.

I did NOT cheat, but yesterday when I met with my NUT, she asked me if I followed the diet. I told her yes and then she smiled. She said most people don't, but as long as you replace a shake with a high Protein snack (cheese stick?), you will be alright. You would think I wish I would have known that-but honestly, sticking to all liquids really taught me a lot about myself and I am really glad I did it.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
