If you were on a full week (or more) of liquids before your surgery, did you cheat? I have done really well since Monday, but I would love a string cheese stick right now. It is still low in carbs, do you think it will hurt?

nope...it won't hurt......at least not in MY surgeon's opinion. But he doesn't insist on a full liquid diet pre op either.

You should follow YOUR surgeon's advice (disclaimer)...oh hell, go ahead and eat the cheese.

Well, I'm going to be the voice of reason here....I have been doing liquids for one full week and have another full week to go...I have not cheated one bit...I've actually been a little more restrictive...I'm allowed broth and sugar free Jello, etc...but have had none of it.....

coffee, 3 shakes a day and a ton of Water.....down 15 pounds in 6 days and just keep thinking it's a drop in the bucket, but eventually the drops add up!

For me if I eat the cheese, I may eat another piece tomorrow and then reason with myself how I could propably have a small piece of chicken or some other non-liquid Protein...One piece of cheese could end up setting off a whole world of bigger issues....So, I vote to stick with the doctors orders, put down the cheese and drink Water, lots of water....You'll be happy in the long run that you followed the plan and lost some additional weight pre-op.

I was on a hi Protein low carb diet prior to surgery, and I did not deviate from it...but it was not hard...I never have been big on carbs, I love meat and veggies and salads. I was so motivated because my weight was interfering with my life, so I really got "into it" a bit obsessively, I must confess.

I agree with Bambi... for me if I had a piece of cheese today then tomorrow it'd be 'oh an apple surely would be okay' and then everything would landslide.

Just think of it as: you don't have to do this for much longer, and you have you've done so well.

Just think how proud of yourself you'll be going into surgery having totally stuck to the plan!

My pre-op diet was 4 or 5 Protein shakes during the day and a meal at night of 3 oz of lean meat and 2 cups of low carb veggies. The surgeon said it was to strip stored glycogen out of the liver and shrink it in size to make the lap surgery easier and safer.

If you are hungry, have another Protein shake.

I would keep the bigger picture in mind, and skip the cheese. Two things to think about

1. I think the pre-op diet is meant to make surgery easier by reducing the amount of fat around your liver (at least this is my understanding- I am not a doctor and I don't play one on TV). I would do anything to make sure my surgery go as well as possible.

2. This is the last diet you will ever do. (the weeks of Pre-op) and the liquid diet post-op (so say6 weeks). The way i see it, we will eat healthy after this, but after years of doing crazy diets, this is the last time ever!

I am on Day 6 of my Clear Liquids, and struggling too. But bigger picture, bigger picture!

I ended up not having it. I just had a bottle of Water. It just sounded good at the time, but today I am glad I didn't do it. I am down 8 lbs in 4 days. Not bad. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it!

I had to do a week liquid diet. When I went in for my surgery, my nurse showed me a before & after pic of my stomach & I could see a ring in the background. I asked what it was & she said if your liver does not fit around that ring when they try to put it on, they sew you back up & tell you when you can follow directions you can come back. The CRAZY thing is they still charge you for the procedure.....

Good thing I stuck with it.....Don't cheat!! It's not worth it!! You can have some cheese when you're all better.

Hey BigTex,, that is a diet I could handle for a couple weeks. I am in the middle of week 2. I have cheated a little, but very little, and nothing high in carbs, I also excercise every day. I have lost 15lbs. Calories never over 1125, carbs around 100. But the last week, prior to surgery, I am going to tighten it up to not over 800 cals per day, and more than 64oz of Water a day. I am a better sprinter than a long distance type of guy.

Bambi, I do know once I had that first cheat it was harder to not cheat. Kinda like potato chips. Don't do as I have done,, don't take that first drink (bite in our case). I am still 1 1/2 weeks from surgery,, it seems so far away...

I'm so glad to hear you did not cheat, after all you will be the only one that know, but you will KNOW!!! I only had to do 3 days, which I was so sick with my band complications was easy. Now if I would have been healthy and had to do 2 weeks, I would have had a touch time!!! Just think of all of the weight you will lose!! and once you are sleeved it falls off, stick to your guns!!

Good luck, and happy losing!

I followed what my surgeon asked me to do. As someone already said, I was also looking at a bigger picture. My doctor told me that a pre-op diet isnt necessary with a bmi of under 50. He requested a bowel clease 48 hours prior to flying as he didn't want me to have a sense of urgency on an airplane or while traveling. After a bowel cleanse, then it was Clear Liquids only until surgery.

I have a bmi of 42, but I am still sticking to it. My mouth was watering when my daughter was eating a pickle tonight, but I refused. I will get to eat regular foods soon enough!

I had fish, salad, and Protein Shakes. I did not cheat. Someone I know followed the diet perfect except for one mishap - eating bacon, eggs, and biscuits a couple days before surgery. Her liver cracked during surgery and she was out of work for 8 weeks recovering!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
