Hi there, I am 4 weeks 3 days out from surgery and I am on mushies at the moment, but am able to tolerate a fair bit which has me a little concerned! I am able to eat scrambled eggs no problem at all, and what I think, quite an amount, probably over half cup, and I am also eating mince o.k, and last night tried some chicken and mashed potato. I have eaten a peach (with no skin) and that was fine, and also when we were out and I was hungry, tolerated fine about 5 french fries. I am starting to worry that I am eating too much!.. Oh I can also drink quite a bit!! I have had soda with no problems, and juice but mainly stick to water!. Am I am going too fast, but it is causing me no problems!! Do I worry, is this eating pattern normal at this stage? I am still losing weight which is great though :-) !!

Has nobody told you that drinking soda is against the rules with a sleeved stomach? Has your doctor not told you which foods are allowed on the mushy stage? I don't think french fries are on the list.

You should get full a lot faster when you move to solid food.

No nobody has told me that drinking soda is against the rules, and I have only tried it once but as I said mainly stick to water!. The nutritionist that works with my doctor didn't give me a list, just said everything has to be blended into a thick mash or scrambled eggs, thick Soup e.t.c. I am sure you are right that french fries are not on the list, which is why I am asking for advice, it is all a learning curve!

I didn't mean to be critical. I know some doctors aren't very clear on the post op diet.

the reason they say not to drink soda is that it is supposed to stretch out the new stomach.

Hi Kiwi, sorry your doctor wasn't more specific! Here is the list of Mushies my dietitian gave me:

-lowfat and non-fat cottage cheese, string cheese, and sliced cheese

- smooth Peanut Butter

- fat free refried Beans

- eggs

- tofu

- pureed plain vegetables, fruit, and meat (or 2nd stage baby foods)

- Water packed chicken or tuna blended with mayonnaise

- mashed potato

- mashed banana

- unsweetened applesauce

- plain oatmeal or low-Fiber Cereal, such as Rice Krispies, soaked in skim milk until soggy

- well cooked rice & Pasta

- 1 tsp. margarine, oil, or Mayonnaise daily

Then the guidelines are:

- eat 3 small meals, approx. 1/4 cup per meal

- eat & chew slowly & thoroughly

- stop eating when you *start* to feel full

- wait 30 minutes before and after meals to drink liquids

- include 2-3 Protein supplements to achieve 60-70 grams total Protein daily from food & protein supplements combined

- total Fluid intake should be 64 oz daily, including protein supplements

She also says to try to have 1 "protein food" per meal, two foods total. And when starting mushies to add one new food per meal so if something doesn't agree with your tummy, you know what it was. This is just my dietitian's plan, but I hope it helps. :thumbup1:

Thanks MidwestGirl, that really does help. They are pretty much the foods that I have been sticking too, so it is good to know I am kind of on the right track. The main difference I have been doing is probably having 2 meals per day, not three, and they would just over 1/4 cup. I have an appointment with my surgeon in one week, and have started a food diary so can go through it with him to make sure I am on the right track. Everything I do eat is blended and the peach and those pesky 5 french fries (which I won't do again) were chewed to a blended consistency. I definitely get the feeling of fullness and stop as soon as I feel that which is a new concept to me :-)

Thanks again for your reply, it really helped. Good luck for your journey, I hope it is going well and you are healing nicely :-)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
