Counting cals, fat, carbs??

Recommended Posts

So, today I had my "two week" check-up (a few days early since I go back to college on Sunday), and the surgeon & dietitian said I'm doing great! I realized once I got home and started using my "Personal food & Fitness Journal" (which is nice because I can keep track of my diet & exercise in one place! :biggrin0:)...I kept track of what I've been eating. With 2 Protein Shakes a day and BEFORE dinner, I'm eating 390 cals, 4g fat, and 42.4 carbs. Also, strangely, 42.4g of Protein so far today. I'm slowly but surely getting to 64 oz of Fluid a day, but my main concern is the carbs. I know we're supposed to stay as low carb as possible while losing, but I was wondering when you guys really started worrying about the calorie & carb counts?? I'm still on full liquids so I've been doing 2 protein shakes (210 calories per drink when made with skim milk) and about 2 - 4oz. servings of Soup (also with skim) and then about 5 or 6 oz. cream of wheat (also skim) per day. All the soup (which is what they told me to eat) is a LOT of carbs. So someone help me please! :drool5: Should I be worried at this stage about my carb count? Or is it just once I'm on "real" food? Any advice would be muchly appreciated.

i think my best advice is to call your dr. he'll tell you exactly when to start counting cals fat and carbs.

goodluck on your new weightloss journey.

I didn't start counting carbs until I was 30 days post op. I drank liquids that were sugar free and only had cream of wheat once because it is such a high carb food and it makes me have a sugar crash after, but I didn't count the carbs in my Soups. (I wasn't eating anything with noodles, just things like Cream of Shrimp, Cream of chicken, pureed bean soup).

The first 30 days is about getting in enough liquids and Protein for your body to heal. Slowly adding in foods in the prescribed post op diet incorporates the foods your body needs. My advice is to "watch" the carbs and try to avoid "junk carbs" but not to obsess about it. For instance...don't go out and drink a Steak and shake Milkshake, but don't panic if your Protein Drink has a few extra carbs.

JMHO,

Yes, I agree with Tracy, i was told that i'm supposed to concentrate on Protein and Fluid intake right now, but i still don't get alot of calories in maybe 630 if that on a good day, and about 73grams protein. . . today was really bad, i helped my daughter move back into her dorm so didn't eat or drink properly, couldn't eat my dinner either, just about 2 oz, but at least it was something huh?

Thanks for the advice, all! I did call my dietitian & she said not to worry about counting carbs at all. :blushing: She said so long as I do Protein first, the carbs shouldn't be that high. I'm thinking I'll keep track but not worry myself over it unless I hit a big stall, then I might start trying to do less carbs. Thanks again! :confused1:

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
