The hair loss has begun!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I can't believe how much hair I'm losing. It's actually shedding all over the place and when I brush my hair brush is full of hair! If I keep losing my hair at this rate will I need a wig, will I lose it all? I'm taking in as much Protein as I can maybe 50-70 grams a day. I just can't believe that this is happening at this rate and I wonder if and when it will level off and/or my hair will grow back. I need to wash and blowdry my hair and color my roots too and I'm so afraid that the stress of the process will take out even more hair. Any suggestions of things that have been tried and true will be seriously considered, Thanks.:smile1:

Hi,

I am only one week post op so I'm afraid I do not have personal knowledge on the subject. But, I know two people who freaked out about losing their hair four months post vsg. They had gobs of hair in the shower drain and hair just everywhere. When it calmed down, they looked totally the same. I want to say it took a couple of months but don't quote me.

Hope this helps.

I did not ever blow dry my hair during the losing stage. Unfortunately, nothing is going to stop the Hair loss. You can take Biotin, or use Folicure or Rogaine Shampoo to help with regrowth.

I also have not colored my hair since it started falling out.

Luckily, it's a temporary side effect, and the hair will grow back. Stressing about it will only make it worse. Take a deep breath, and know that your hair will grow back. I already have new growth that is 2-3 inches long all over my head especially around my forehead hairline.

Hi Lan - my surgeon told me to take in minimum 70 grams of Protein. You may want to try and up the quantity if possible....

Hi Lan,

I'm sorry this is happening. I had to do chemo type drugs several years ago. While my hair didn't all fall out, I lost a lot of it. I stopped coloring it and cut it very short so that I wouldn't need to brush it or dry it. It all grew back! I'm not looking forward to losing it again but I'm going to cut it short again when my turn comes.

Question - does this happen to everyone? I have a very thick head of hair so I'm not too worried about becoming too thin. I guess the good news that less hair means less time with the flat iron!

However, I might need to keep a vaccuum in the bathroom as to not gross my husband out.

I only know of a very few people this did not happen to. It is very frightening, but everyone tells me it does grow back. Believe me, I tried every supplement anyone told me to try, and I lost it with band surgery and again with sleeve surgery.I HAD really thick hair, but not anymore. I too have new hair growing in, but it's going to take awhile to replace all that I lost.

Nothing feels as good as not being fat anymore though! I wish I had done this years ago, even though my hair is really thin now.

Hi Lan,

I take Fish Oil or (Omega 3), and try to get in 80g Protein.. that was what I was told to do to help with the hair loss but I am 8 weeks and not had any yet. From what I have read most people experience it at 3mths or so and it lasts a few months.. I am concerned because I have psoriasis and don't want thinner hair since people will be able to see my scalp more BUT in the end.. it was one of the things I decided even if that happens.. I will get more from losing weight. I don't know I hope that helps.. there are so many benefits.... from the surgery... I try to remind myself of that.. especially on hard days..

I lost hair with my lapband surgery (and subsequent weight loss), I got my hair cut a bit shorter and just waited it out. At the time of my revision surgery I had a full thick head of hair. I imagine the same thing will happen and I just have to be prepared to clean hair from the drain and the bathroom floor while it's happening. I didn't take anything extra or do anything extra for my hair while it was going on.

I have also lost a lot of hair. I would rather be thin and healthy though. My hair is everywhere. My coworkers know where I have been in the office because there is blonde hairs left behind. My new vac had an actual clog of blonde hairs when I first used it. Took me 20 mins to get it unclogged.

I started taking Biotin about 2 months ago and my hair stylist said he's noticing some new growth. I have lost more hair than I'd hoped, but I'll trade hair for losing this weight!

Having read through many of these posts now on various weight loss forumns, I had to take the time to register and post about my personal experience. I am still in the process of scheduling the vsg myself, but I am not new to the extreem low fat diets.

I have had hair and skin issues on extreem low fat diets in the past until I read somewhere about the benifits of good fats to your system. I have been able to have great results for skin, hair, and nails using fish oil suppliments. I tried some of the cheap fish oil pills and they usually are terrible giving gas and fishy burps, but the best results have been from the more expensive liquid fish oil suppliment that have the orange flavor--Im not here to advertise a brand so I will leave that up to you, Just get the good stuff from health food stores and research which ones have the best taste.

Again this may not be the issue for the main poster as there are other causes of hair loss--but in my personal experience lack of the needed fats like Omega 3 affected ME in this way. It may be at least worth buying a bottle and trying it.

There is allot on the web suggecting the same thing--search the web for "Why Fish Oil Helps Reduce Hair Loss"

Also don't fear the effects of supplimenting "fat" to your diet. These are needed fats you likely wont get unless you eat Salmon or other fish allot. They also actually aid in so many body functions and aid you in loosing body fat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
