I have been having a sore throat for several weeks. I have run out of Nexium and my insurance doesn't cover it. I have been taking OTC Priolsec occasionally. I never had heartburn or reflux prior to surgery. I really don't have any somach issues or stuff coming up in my throat. Just the sore throat. Any suggestions or anyone experiencing the same issue? My surgery was July 25th with Dr. Aceves. I have lost 55 pounds (still not exercising but will definately be adding that soon).

Deanna :)

I have had a continual sinus drip (more like a flow) since the surgery. It can irritate my throat. Also in the morning when I brush my teeth and gargle I retch and heave and gag and I think it's related to my sinus/mucus problem.

I see an allergist for my "sinus" problems. These problems include sore throat, nasal dripping at times, and constant throat clearing. My allergist informed me I didn't actually have sinus problems, my sinus symptoms were caused by my acid reflux. The weird part for me was that I wasn't having the typical acid reflux symptoms, so I had no idea the mucus and throat trouble could be caused by acid reflux. My allergist prescribed me Acifex. I'm not saying that is what you need, but this was my trouble. In case I didn't describe this well enough, I found this link The Connection Between Acid Reflux And Sinus Problems

I would try to get in to your PCP/M to make sure it's sinus/allergy related. Our weather here in NW Florida has been crazy, and I've had allergy/sinus issues because of the drastic changes.

I'm taking a Dayquil every other day.

Has the Acifex fixed the problem? How long have you been taking it? Can you please tell me if there are any adverse side effects to the Acifex? All of the symptoms you have described I am having and then some. In the morning I literally retch and heave as if I am vomiting but nothing is coming out except for excessive saliva and some mucus. I am in severe distress because of this. I made an appointment to see a GI specialist tomorrow but now I wonder if it's an allergist I should be seeing instead. All of the acid reflux meds I have tried like prilosec, protonix, etc. have made my morning symptoms worse...thickened the mucus lining my throat and mouth etc. I have suspected that this problem stems from this surgery somehow and you may have the answer. Your allergist seemed to be able to decipher the problem. Where is he/she located?

Aciphex (sorry, my original spelling was incorrect) has helped me, but like Tiff, I would recommend seeing a doctor about these symptoms. My allergist is located in Texas and did tell me that normally a GI would be the one to diagnose and prescribe for this condition. However, since I went to an allergist (assuming it was allergy/sinus related) she prescribed me Aciphex.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I am having so much trouble with mucus and sinus that I have suspected all along it must have to do with the newly formed stomach and excessive production of mucus. I am seeing a GI doctor tomorrow. In the meanwhile I spoke to my surgeon and read some of the info you have posted. He phoned in a precription for the Aciphex and said it was OK for me to try it. What I really want to know if you don't mind is if it has resolved your excessive mucus/sinus problem. and If you are experiencing any negative side effects from it like a severely dry mouth especially over night, any nausea? Thanks so much.

Aciphex has solved my troubles. I haven't had too much excess mucus. My symptoms were constantly clearing of the throat, coughing, slight nasal dripping, and sore throat. The only side effects I know the drug to have (in common cases) are headache, sore throat...ironic, I know, and diarrhea. I personally have not had any of these effects, or the ones you mentioned. Where did you have your surgery done?

So I guess Aciphex is another antacid and since it's working to prevent excess in stomach acid production your body no longer has the need to produce excess mucus. I had my surgery in New York, on Long Island in Syosett Hospital, Syosett, NY. Thanks for putting up this post I hope I find resolution to my problem.

Just curious to know about how long after taking the aciphex did your problem resolve? I am on it now for 4 days and I'm really hoping it will help me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
