Hi Mamarose,

I can't answer your question, but just wanted to say Hi. I have seen that you have to be referred by your Dr. to one of the special clinics....but I don't know a lot more. Check the other thread on the Canadian part here - there is a person from Kingston, ON and I think they could answer your questions.

My brother has been jumping through hoops for almost a full year trying to get ohip (toronto) to cover bypass, and then he switched to sleeve request after he saw my results. There are 2 or 3 dr.s in the toronto area who do the sleeve, but they've done less than 5 surgeries EACH. That's it, 5....no way i'm letting someone do this to me unless they've had over 200 lap sleeves under their belt. I went to Mexico, and it was fantastic.

Hope this helps.

Hi

I am from Toronto but decided to go to Mexico for surgery. I am having VSG in Feb 7 with Dr. Kelly. Total cost with tickets, etc will be less than $6000. I know it is still a lot but if I add all the missed days of work and one year wait for surgery in Ontario that would cost me more.

I was told at TWH that VSG is not covered. Good luck.

I'm from Northern Ontario and I went to Mexico as well.. I wasn't going to qualify in Canada and found out about a friend who had gone to Mexico.. I researched like mad, chose a surgeon, booked it, and within three weeks I was sleeved! Best 6 grand I ever spent and at least the surgeons there have done thousands of procedures! Just food for thought :) If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them honestly.

Take care and good luck with whatever you do!

I went to Dr. Kelly in August.. I'm from up North as well :)

The cost was 5560.00 plus airfare. There wasn't really any wait to get in.. I called them and asked for a date three weeks away and they booked me. It was simple and everything was professional. There are several choices of surgeons in Mexico and many have good reputations. I had a great experience and if you want to know more I can give you the rundown on how it all went. If you are going to go, don't take my word for it.. ask as many people as you can.. :)

Ok I know Dr Kelly's price is up to 5700 now and you are telling me it only cost you 300 for a flight down and back? I know I paid just over 6000 for flight and surgery from NS and that was before his price increase.

This might be late information to this thread, but hopefully it will help someone in the future.

If you're from Ontario, Canada you can check out all the information at http://www.ontariobariatricnetwork.ca

Just have to get your doctor to refer you into the registry, then you'll get a letter in the mail about 1-2months later telling you when your orientation date is... from there you're on your journey!

There are bariatric centres in Hamilton, Toronto, Guelph, and Ottawa that you can have the surgery at.

The bypass & sleeve surgeries are both covered by OHIP!! So rejoice!! I sure am!! :purplebananna: :not_ripe:

There's a

and shares some of the out of pocket expenses she had, so this might help you as well when saving money for this surgery.

Hope this helps my fellow Ontarians! :cornut:

I had the sleeve done in Mexico, because its a few months for consults and such, and the surgeons here have not performed as many as doctors in the US or Mexico. Due to personal reasons, I just forked out the money out of pocket without my doctor referring me to the US or Mexico (for tax credit purposes) as I didn't want to wait months for that to go through. Also, my doctor was reluctant to reccomend the sleeve and preferred I got the band-no thank you-as I plan on getting pregnant in a year or two and have heard stories about slips and such.

I wanted to add that I paid 4500 for surgery and 600 for my tickets, flying out of Toronto. It took some crafty booking on my part, but if you go to cheaptickets.com and fly out of Buffalo to Sandiego, its about 260 bucks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
