Scheduled Jan 27 with Dr. Aceves

Recommended Posts

Okay I am new to this board. I have been so nervous about the whole procedure. I have only told one person besides my husband. My sister who had the RNY and had horrible depression following that. Well our father had passed away not to far before it. I have been dealing with very minimal depression till our mother passed about 3 1/2 years ago. I have not needed any medicine just dealing with it a day at a time. My sister still sees her self as "fat". When do you see your self as skinny or sexy again. Hell I have not felt sexy on a long while, but my husband tells me I am all the time . My weight has fluctuated over the years. I am the heaviest I have ever been. I have been trying to half heartedly "do something about it for years". All the while re bounding after the diets and gaining more. I do not think I would have ever done this on my own. I thank my husband for his support. I feel like it is a ton of money being self pay, but he has assured me that it is money well spent. I am scheduled for January 27 with Dr. Aceves.

Hi Amy, and welcome to VST. I still have mental "fat" days, and I'm down to 149lbs, wearing a size 10 jean/slacks. There is a lot of mental/emotional changes you'll experience with weight loss. Most of my experiences have been great. About 98% of my journey has been positive, and the other 2% has been ups and downs. I had to learn that every day brings a new challenge, and some challenges are more difficult than others. Also, there are many successes that are too many to count.

I had my revision surgery this summer while my husband was deployed, and he wanted to be surprised when he came home. Well, he was so surprised that he didn't recognize me at the airport when I picked him up. I had lost about 75-80lbs from June to October, and he hadn't seen any pics from the neck down. My husband always thought I was beautiful, and sexy because of who I am, and not my pant size.

Since you have some mild depression, I would recommend some counseling with someone who deals with bariatric patients. I kind of went through a mourning phase because I couldn't eat my emotions anymore. I didn't really miss food, but the friendship and bond I had with food. But, now 7 months out, today my relationship with food has completely changed. It's pretty liberating, and exhilirating all at the same time.

If you need anything, or have questions, post away, we'll be able to help support you through all of this. Congrats on getting your date ! ! !

Welcome! It sounds like you have a pretty good support system with your husband and counselor. Be sure to lean on them when you need a little extra support. I lost 70 pounds with my band and don't know that I ever felt "sexy". My husband is like yours and thinks I am all the time! (We are so lucky!) Even though I didn't feel sexy I was so much more confident with myself and I think that showed through in other areas of my life.

Good luck and congratulations with your decision. The 27th isn't that far away!

Hi Amy and welcome to VST. Congrats on your surgery with Dr. Aceves, too - you will LOVE him and his staff. It's great that your husband is so supportive. I agree with Tiffykins that if you have problems with depression, even if mild, seek counseling. I have lost 60 lbs. (last I weighed) and have gone from a size 22W to a 16 misses - and from 2x tops to L and I still don't feel thin or sexy - although my fiance tells me I am all the time. Keep us posted on your journey.

I remember going to my new doctor here. I told her one of my concerns was that I was obese and she said "oh no you just need to loose a little." I told her that I was considering the lap band she said no just Portion Control and write down what you eat. It was upsetting that I actually got up the nerve to admit I was obese and she just brushed me off. Well needless to say I never went to her again.

Hi Amy! Welcome to VSG! I am new as well...just have a couple of posts out here. I am also scheduled for my sleeve on January 27...getting really excited, and a bit nervous at the same time!

That is awesome that you have such a supportive husband! My boyfriend is pretty supportive, but keeps coming back to "it's calories in vs. calories out"...not quite the kind of support I was looking for, but at the end of the day he realizes I'm serious when I say that I am doing this for me this time...it's about me...I love me!!!

Keep me posted on your how you do with the pre-op preparations!

BTW...I have a close friend who is also getting sleeved on the same day...our surgeries are one after the other. Pretty exciting to have her travel with me and be here for support after we get back to Seattle. Her mother-in-law is also traveling with us...she is an RN and wants to make sure we are doing okay. We are going to Las Vegas for our sleeves...Dr. Umbach will be doing the surgeries.

Anyways....welcome!!!

:crying:

I am the "close friend" and cannot wait. Nice to have another person changing their life on the 27th.

My husband is a little lost in all this, but definitely supportive. Dr. Umbach had some webinars he wanted us to watch and my husband sat down with me to watch them last night. He kept saying "It's going to be weird having you thin. Not that I'm complaining!" :001_wub:) Of course, he can eat anything and stay slim and trim - he doesn't really understand how I can overeat and get fat. He watches me dilgently trying (and somehow failing) and understands my need for this tool.

congratulations - let's get our journeys going now!

Hi Amy,

Well my story is a little different so far. I am 7 weeks out... sleeved on Nov 17th.. was 310 lbs, now 267 and I have had days where I feel pretty good/ even some sexy!! It is a very good feeling to feel more confidence and I don't worry quite as much as what everyone else thinks of me and that is liberating. There are days where I don't feel like I've changed.. but the days that I do are so amazing!! I have found that playing a little with make-up is now fun again because I dont' mind looking in the mirror quite as much and it's so much more fun to get "dressed" on a daily basis.... I am excited for the future and love the feeling that the weight is NOT coming back for the first time ever!! Good luck to you and keep us all updated!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
