Personal Question - When did you have your first bowel movement?

Recommended Posts

i was pretty much the same way. sleeved on a tues morning and then didn't go until that saturday. had stomach cramps, sweets and finally went. i did put some Miralax in my Protein Shake for two days and then i finally went. now i go just about every other day. i am about 3 weeks 4 days out. i do believe bowel movements help with weight loss. so i think we need to be having bm's at least every other day. keep hydrated and walking. lol

I would be a bit concerned about that. If the book means to urinate before leaving that is understandable. But a bowel movement could vary greatly depending on the person. I've gone since my 12.29 surgery. But we are all eating so little I can see how others may not have had the urge yet. Would not want to stay in the hospital for that long.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. Urinate, yes, completely understand that one. But BM, hard to have one when they won't give you food. Even after both C-sections all I had to do was pass gas to be released from the hospital (and they were feeding me well).

I actually did a prep the day before surgery to avoid being all bound up, so there was really nothing to pass. The thing they were most interested in were bowel sounds(moving gas and the gurgling sounds your intestines make as they work).

This is what it says:

Bowel Function:

-You will be given a Senokot tablet (vegetable laxative) the night of your operation.

-If this is not effective, on the following day you will receive suppositories every 6 hours until you have a bowel movement.

-Constipation is a common complaint early on after surgery, due to the anesthetic, pain medication, and low Fiber intake during the full liquid phase of your diet that you will be on for 3 weeks after surgery. Try taking a stool softener daily to help you with this. Colace is a name brand-you can get the store brand... ...If you are still having a problem, please contact our office.

So actually it didn't say that they wouldn't release you from the hospital without a bowel movement, but I remember them saying this at our preop appt.

I hope I don't have to stay longer than 2 nights!

Well, today was the big day for me, and that is 6 days post op. I took 2tbsp of Milk of Magnesia on Sat., then 4 tbsp on Sunday. Maybe it might be somewhat dependant on the amt. of pain meds you require? I milked that morphine drip for E-V-E-R-Y drop, so that might have been part of my issue. I also think I had some fear about contracting my abdominals and it being too much strain on my sleeve. It was all just fine-and-dandy. I did not, and have not had any issues with diarrhea, and that is a frequent issue for many. So I guess it really does just kinda depend on the person. I am very glad I was allowed to just have this occur at its pace which was slower than most.

Woo Woo!!!

Yes the narcotic pain medications can slow things down to a near halt for some people.

YAH! I was just about to send you a message to see what was going on with you! I agree on the pain meds. It really does a number on your colon!

How are you feeling?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
