Wow....I ate a few fingers of mashed potatoes while cooking dinner for the kids today. Now I feel like there is a huge boulder on my chest! I may never try anything but liquids after this. I could not even walk down the stairs...LOL! Thought for sure I could handle a little but maybe it was the butter in them that fought me and won. Now I am just praying for this to pass ASAP! I have been trying to drink to help it move through. Anybody else run into this? How long did the pain last??? BTW, I am 15 days out.

Hey Nick-

I got that pain all the time in the beginning. And still do occasionally. I'm 8 weeks out. My doc told me it's from eating too much too fast, and the food travels back up the esophagus. NOT pleasant. I can't even breathe deeply. I've heard it lasting anywhere from 5 hours to a few seconds. Mine usually stops after about 30 mins. Drinking only ever made it worse for me. I just had to stop eating and sit up. I made the mistake of laying down once, and threw up. Yuck.

Hope this helped. Good luck. :)

I had trouble with potatoes too. I have been able to stomach most everything I've tried, but the mashed potato caused tummy to be very unhappy. And, when I introduced corned beef hash, the potato in it also caused discomfort. Could just be potato and not all mushy food.< /p>

I have had this pain too, for me, I have determined it is from eating too much too fast. It almost feels like it is stuck in my chest and I can't breathe. I have to train myself to slow down, smaller bites, more chewing, take time in between each bite.

This is a big lesson to learn for me since I was a binge eater and could throw down TONS of food in minutes. I have to sit bite, chew, breathe, and take a break and repeat.

Just my 2 cents. I am 3.5 weeks out now...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
