Fills with flouroscopy?

Recommended Posts

My doctor only does fills under flouroscopy, and I totally see the appeal in this as he will be able to see very closely how restricted I am. He said that most of his patients get great restriction after only one fill, and he has only ever had to do just a handful of unfills because someone was too tight.

It makes me wonder why more doctors don't use flouroscopy to do fills. Does your doctor use flouro, and if not, do you wish they did?

Fills are $250 with him (100 for me after insurance), but it seems like I will probably need fewer, and it seems like this will be a more accurate way to get fills.

Am I naive? I hardly ever see people post that their docs use flouro, and it seems like everyone is having to get multiple fills and unfills. I am not saying that it is wrong not to have them done under flouro, but the flouro does make sense to me. Thoughts?

My first fill is scheduled for June 7th, and I am thrilled. I need it bad!

No fluro here. My doctor had me drink a small cup of Water after my fill to be sure I wasn't too tight. However, I have read about those who drink just fine in the office and before they get home they are gurgling on their own spit. So I think swelling may occur after a fill. If that's true, I wonder if the fluro shows any more than drinking shows? Sure, it goes through now.. but what about later?

Everyone's stomachs are so different and the body can react a certain way one day and a completely different way the next. From all the posts I've read about people getting fills, I really don't think there's a way to eliminate the "trial by error" method of find the right fill. Luckily, I've only had one fill (1cc in a 4cc band) and I've found it to be perfect.

My doc does them with fluoro too but just told me that any other fills I need can be done in the office b/c my port is located in such a great spot.

I didn't realize that was one of the reasons that they are done under fluoro.

I've had both and to me, I'd rather have flouro anyday. I love that the flouro reassures both me and the doc that the band is in the correct position, first of all. It shows the shape and size of my pouch, which is a big concern over a long period of time AND he can judge how restricted I am both before and after the fill.

I really hate 'blind' fills. For me, personally, I just feel so much more in control if I can see my band, KNOW the pouch looks good and KNOW that there is Fluid running through when I leave. True, what looks good on film this morning can become tighter. I've experienced that as well, but I am a big advocate of flouro.

My doctor does all of my fills under floro. I love it because I can watch on the tv screen as the barium goes through. I can see what it is that I can feel...if that makes sense.

Since every body is different and every doctor is different then every fill will be different. I think a fill is a steal at $100. That's only one month at weight watchers!!

Good luck!

Megan

That's kind of how I feel too. I am glad that my doc does all his fills under flouro. It will be really cool to see the pouch!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
