Traveling Home From VSG Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

What I need help with is knowing how you felt the day you left the Hospital. I am scheduled to have surgery 01-25-10 with Dr. Aceves and trying to decide if I should fly or drive. It is a 1500 mile trip one way from my home.

If I fly I will go alone due to the extra cost for airfare. If we drive we can make the trip for the cost of one person flying. I have not asked the Dr. office yet, just wanted to get feed back from some of you.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

My instructions about traveling during the first six weeks, is to stop every hour and get out of the car and walk for about 5 minutes. I had surgery Tuesday and traveled 1.5 hours each way on Friday. I should've stopped but didn't. It just wore me out all that much more. Good luck!

Gary,

If you can stand to go alone, just fly. Your trip will be less exhausting which will speed healing. I went alone and had surgery Dec 14th....no worries there. Fabulous staff, and you'll meet friends so you won't feel alone at all. Plus it was almost easier for me to be there alone and not have someone fussing over me.

I am fine with going by myself after reading the post on this forum and others but my

family is pushing for me to have someone go. I would rather fly and not go through the two day drive both ways.

Thank you very much for responding.

I flew alone and am glad I did. Driving that far is a set-up for a blood clot, even if you stop every hour and walk. It would have been exhausting, even if someone else drove.

If you decide to fly, travel light because you should not be lifting anything after surgery. Ernesto will take you to the airport and put your bag on the curb for you. I checked mine right there on the curb, and only carried my pillow. (now with the recent problems, you probably can't keep a pillow on your lap though).

Good luck!

I would not have been up for a long, 1500 mile drive home post-op. The 30 minutes I had to drive was more than enough for me. Good Luck!

I flew down to Mexicali by myself and had no trouble navigating around the airport when I changed planes. I would not have wanted to make a long trip out of it by driving. I think you are doing the right thing by flying. They treat you great at the hospital. I never felt alone. I loved it there!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
