What to take with you to surgery......

Recommended Posts

Well, my day is almost here! Tomorrow I am traveling about 3 or so hours to my Dallas for my surgery on Tues., 12/29. Just wondering, besides the "usual," was there anything you wished you would have packed for post-op? I have my hubbie and lip balm packed - these seemed like the essentials but thought there might be some other goodies I should take? All of my p.j's have elastic waists, is that going to work? Thanks for your help. I am nervous as a cat, but have gotten so much encouragement from all of you. THANKS SO MUCH for sharing your stories.

Leave the jammies at home. I stayed in the hospital gown while I was there, it was much easier to move in, go to the bathroom in, etc than jammies. Take a pair of slippers and don't forget the LIP BALM! I took a robe but only wore it a couple of times. Toothbrush and toothpaste are important to help get the funky taste out of your mouth. I wore out the clothes I wore in. Take phone charger. It's the least I've ever taken anywhere when traveling. I didn't worry about make-up, though I did take my face cleanser.

I'm thinking of you and praying for you! I'll be in Dallas Wed. to get my drain out. I hope to see you then!

Hi barbann,

I followed the advice on the forum and took all the suggested things (comfy clothes, lip balm, Water spray etc) and found them all useful during my hospital stay.

Nerves are perfectly natural and it would be surprising if you didn't have them..... but I'm sure you're equally excited about the op. Focus on the positives. That really helped me 2 weeks ago.

See you on the losing side.

Best Wishes

Craig

The only things I found useful were my phone charger, deodorant and my boxers! I had a bag packed with stuff I did not need or use. I was stuck in hospital gown all 4 days (with drain tube and IV's and such, I couldn't switch into my t shirts). Wore hospital socks the whole time too! Hospital provided everything else I needed (including toothpaste & toothbrush) :001_unsure:

PS: Also took big picture of the kids with Santa that I kept right next to the TV to keep me motivated to get my butt home!!!

Barbann -

Here is what I brought - lip balm, deodorant, toothpaste/brush, face cleaner and moisturizer. A hairbrush. I did bring my pj's and did change into them after a shower. They also have you walking, walking, walking - I brought my robe and slippers for the journeys up and down the halls. I wore sweats & tshirt home. I also brought phone charger and laptop with movies - I can't sleep in hospitals very well so I usually watch movies at night. Good luck on Tuesday - I will be praying for a smooth surgery and a quick recovery for you. Give us an update when you can.

Hey Barbann, My surg is the same day as yours and I am nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof! Still wondering and hoping I am doing the right thing. Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
