I am considering between Dr. Aceves and Dr. Zapata. The only reason I am not all out for Dr. Aceves is that it is much further of a journey for me. I can be in Monterrey within a few hours and get a friend to take me. But if I go with Dr. Aceves I have to drive myself to San Antonio catch a flight then ride 2 hours to the hospital and then do the same backwards to get home. I will also have to pay for my friend's flight there and back and I am already paying for his passport. My friend lives in San Antonio so it is complicated to have him drive here to pick me up to drive me back to San Antonio to catch a flight. I am not sure if I should be driving myself 2 hours to get from San Antonio to home only a few days after surgery?

Has anyone been to Dr. Zapata for this surgery recently? I am having a tough time finding many posts about him and I am sure at least half of them is people getting paid for it.

Part of me feels that the fact that people are not posting about this surgeon should help me decide against him. But the few comments I have seen are good.

Dr. Zapata did my surgery on November 29th. I would go with him again in a heartbeat. The facility he uses Santa Engracia (sp) hospital is IMMACULATE. The nursing staff is excellent, even though they don't all speak english, I had no problems showing them what I needed. Feel free to send me a private message if you have any additional questions. Dr. Z has a very very patient, kind, bedside manner, and I know I called him on his cell phone several times with questions...he ALWAYS answered and spoke with me kindly. Since I have been back we have exchanged emails regurarly, he even emailed me back on Christmas day when I had a question. He's top notch!

I'm here in Corpus Christi, TX. My surgery is scheduled for Jan 21st. I went with Dr. Zapata because of the location and I've only found good things about him. His patient coordinator have been wonderful and have answered many questions.

SHONTEL: How has your recovery been? Any issues? I'm trying to get ready for my surgery date any suggestions on what to take?

Dr. Zapata did my band surgery in June of 2007 and would have done my sleeve surgery but I had some issues and needed to remove the band a few weeks before the sleeve and just couldn't go to Mexico twice. Dr. Zapata is wonderful! He is so kind and patient and tells you the truth about what is going on. The hospital feels is wonderful and they give you a list of phrases in English/Spanish so you can just point and let the nurses know what you need. Judy and Janet are great, too. And then Alma there in Monterrey is fantastic. I would trust Dr. Zapata and all of his staff with any kind of surgery he does.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
