Teenager in Vidor died Had lap band and Medical Center Obesity center closed

Recommended Posts

I am not saying the band caused the death but it is strange that the hospital closed two days later. I am not paniced, I am trying to find out any info anyone might have and i knew this would be my best source. My son went to school at VHS and was told by some of his friends(that knew her) that she had a band. These kids would not even know i was thinking about getting banded . SO I am just stating what I heard and will post facts as I hear them

What a sad loss. It is truly tragic for her parents, family, friends and school. I hope they find the answers, and pary they all find some closure.

For Mike's 50th b-day last year we rented a Harley and and took a ride in the mountains. Now next year when I turn 50 and after I lose half me me, I will be able to something I have wanted to do with Mike for the last 5 years SKYDIVE ! ! !

And I look forward to our next motorcyle trip in the mountains, I know it will be more comfortable for both of us

Lisa's scenario makes sense. It probably was not band related. Sounds like someone that died of cardiac arrest just happened to have a band. Whew! (wiping head of sweat).....

I live in Dayton and my husband works all over the area (Vidor & Beaumont included) and we had neither one heard about this. I feel so bad for her parents, family and friends. It is so tragic when someone so young with so much life to live dies, it makes my heart ache. Re: the band, I feel it probably had nothing to do with her death. I will not ever worry (unless medically proven) about my band. Lets face it, nearly everything we do in life has a potential risk for killing us either directly or indirectly!

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the site and I'm considering surgery from Dr. Ortiz.

This scares me! I have heard of other people with problems from the same medical center in my area.

I have searched on this and cannot find anywhere that this girl had a lapband. Where did you read this? If she did have WLS the obesity may have contributed to her cardiac arrest.

Mary

Hey jjolive, welcome to LBT.

ALL surgeries have a risk for complications - even simple dental procedures have resulted in death. It's highly unlikely, but it DOES happen.

Most U.S. lapband doctor's have a complication rate of about 1-3%. The upside of lap band surgery is that the VAST majority of complications are not life-threatening. The chance of you dying from lap band surgery is miniscule.

Do a lot of research. Find the best doctor, at the best location. Do everything in your power to be in the best condition to withstand surgery. That's really all you can do.

Here's an update to this story. The autopsy revealed that she died from Viral Meningitis. Here is a link to the story:

Thank you for posting this - I thought it was very unlikely that a lap band had anything to do with with her sudden death. Wonder if she even had a band?

I am glad we found out how she died even though it is so sad. I still think she had a band but it was not in anyway the cause of her death. I still dont know why the hospital closed its obesity wing down but...probably just a conceindence(???) My dr is going to use an other hospital now and will call me for a surgery date in the second week of july!!! so i am just waiting

I am from Vidor and last week they had an update on her. They reported she died from Viral meningitis. They didn't say anything about having the lap band. Just thought I would give you all an update and to encourage you all to keep up the good work and keep her in your prayers...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
