My band is slipped, thinking of sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I found out last week that my band is slipped, the Dr that did the EGD wrote 'mild' band slippage on the pictures. He also mentioned that it would need to be surgiacally repaired. My band surgeon stated that I need to have a flouro done (this Wednesday) to verify and see how bad it was. I am concerned by what I am reading that once you slip, it will happen again. Since I may need revision to fix the band, I was thinking about going with the sleeve. Any thoughts on what I need to be considering, or how to tell my surgeon that this is what I want. I have gained back almost all of my weight and my BMI is still showing me at obese!

thanks,

Patti

I've heard the same thing about slippage that once it happens, you're prone to slip again. I revised to the sleeve, and love my decision.

Life is much easier with the sleeve. It didn't take me much to consider the sleeve as an option because my life with the band was miserable. I would hope your band doctor would listen, and be concerned about future slips. My 2nd surgeon told me he could just do a port revision to see if that would help, but I fought for a revision. I wanted that dreadful band out of my body, and off of my stomach. He agreed once he realized how bad the band was for my body.

I would not go through another surgery to repair a band. There's plenty of patients out there who keep having surgeries to fix the bands, and to me, it's nothing shy of malpractice to temporarily fix something that is obviously very broken.

I can definitely attest to once it slips, it continues to slip. Mine slipped three times. After the first slip, it was never right. Even with very little or no fill, I wouldn't be able to get anything down. The last year I had the band, I lived on ice cream because it was the only thing I could get down, and still managed to slip the band again!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
