To work or not to work?

Recommended Posts

So I need to know about how much work to take off? I only work part time right now, and the work I do isn't too rough so I was hoping I wouldn't need to take that much time off of work.

From what most people say they return to work (sedentary positions) around 7-8 days post-op. If your job requires lifting, up and moving a bunch, you may want to take 2 weeks.

Your energy levels will be low the first couple of weeks due to lack of calories. I was extremely tired the first couple of weeks with my band surgery, but I returned to my position in an insurance agency 5 days post-op.

I took four weeks, but I have a very physically demanding job. Desk jobs only require 2 weeks. I'm only 6 days out, and feel great, nothing hurts, incisions are healing well, scabbed over and itching...GOOD SIGN. I walk 2 miles a day..I love the sleeve. About your baby girl. If she is over 20lbs. you won't be able to pic her up for 4 weeks. but she can be near you, sit in your lap, as long as she don't hurt you.

I have a desk job - I had my surgery on Friday and returned to work the following Friday - I was fine, tired by the end of the day; other than that did fine. If you're only working PT and don't have a strenuous job, I would think if you took 1 week you'd be fine.

I took off 2 weeks, and was glad I did. I was easily fatigued those first two weeks, since I was on Clear Liquids only for 1 week and full liquids for 1 week. After starting mushies I got stronger and felt almost back to my normal self the third week. It was nice to be able to just go take a nap when I felt like it those first two weeks. I say if you have sick time, take it for a couple of weeks.

Thanks everyone! I have decided to take two weeks off, 1 week for the actual procedure and hospital stay and the 2nd week for healing. Then we'll just go from there. I think it is great that with this procedure you don't need months off of work, and it doesn't seem to take that long to start feeling back to normal!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
