straws? I can't remember why we're not supposed to use them.

I know my surgeon is going to tell me not to use a straw for any drinking after surgery. What I can't remember is why?

I don't know why - we were given straws in the hospital to drink the "blue" juice and other juices with every meal, so I'm no help with the "no straws" rationale.

Let me know Tracey because Dr. A did my surgery - and as I said - we were given straws with every meal for the apple juice and some nasty orange stuff and, of course, the blue dye drink.

Oh - and you won't GULP (at least not more than once or twice) following your sleeve surgery ... I'm almost 6 months out and although I can take bigger swallows than before, I definitely can't GULP (without pain that is)

I'm just over 2 weeks out and I can take very big drinks. I'd say almost able to gulp and it doesn't bother me at all. I still try to take little drinks but only because I dont know if I might harm something by taking bigger drinks.

With the band, I couldn't drink through a straw because it added too much air to my pouch.

Early in my recovery with my band to sleeve revision, straws were a big no-no. It definitely put more air in my tummy, and made me uncomfortable.

Now, I can drink through straws with zero issue. I have found that I actually get in more liquid if I drink through a straw. I don't drink through a straw with that first sip after a meal (of course 30 minutes after food) because that still causes some slight discomfort.

Drinking with a straw causes too much air in the stomach ... that is what our "instruction" book says..

I was told NOT to use a straw because of the air that you swallow with it would cause more discomfort and make it more difficult to get your required amount of liquid in.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
