Three month VSG lurker

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, My name is Jodi (mutti). I had my surgery on August 31, 2009. I started at 214 lbs. and I am 4'11". My BMI was 41.8.

My surgeon was/is Dr. Eric Wilson (Houston, TX). I am currently weigh 161 with a BMI of 33. I've been stick at this weight for about 2 1/2 weeks down. I know I'm losing inches but even that seems to have slowed down.

I've been on the boards a lot lately looking for encouragement and decided it was time to put myself out there.

thanks for letting me lurk and now join in the conversation.:w00t:

Hey Mutti, and welcome to VST. We're glad to have you here. I think everyone hits a stall here and there. I know I have my slower weeks, but I just have to remember to get back to the basics. Usually increasing my Water intake helps substantially.

Glad you decided to join us here, and if you need anything let us know.

Welcome Jodi! Congratulations on your weight loss so far (we had similar losses)! I just had my 4 month surgiversary yesterday, and my weight loss has been slow now for almost a month. Do you exercise? I'm hoping that maybe doing a little more exercise (adding in Sundays on a consistent basis) will help me. Good luck!

Deedee - I do work out with a personal trainer 2 days a week. I wondered if I needed to add to that. He has told me I don't eat enough (even through he told me his aunt had a Gastric Bypass), he doesn't understand that it's just not possible. When I started working out - is when my weight loss stopped. I talked to my doctor at my 3 month check up and he wasn't concerned. I have lost 8 inches overall during the month I've been working out with him.

Just frustrating... I know I set myself up with expectation that don't happen then start second guessing myself with my decision. I need ya'll help in not sabotaging myself once again....

Mutti - 8 inches is a tremendous loss. That is the great thing about the sleeve - even if the scale isn't moving (and yes it is VERY frustrating) the inches seem to be melting off.

Take your measurements, if you haven't already and when the scale doesn't move, take your measurements again and you'll see a loss.

Also, if you are weighing every day - STOP - you'll drive yourself crazy as your weight can fluctuate 3-5 lbs just due to Water weight or other factors. Just weigh once a week - of if you have to weigh every day - pick 1 day as your "official" weigh in day and only pay attention to what the weight is that day.

Hang in there - stalls are normal, and they happen to everyone (except MacMadame) but they don't last forever. Promise!

Hi Jodi,

welcome...and don't panic. You stopped losing weight when you starting working out with a trainer? Your body is probably reacting to the more intense workouts and hanging onto weight for the moment...once your body accustoms to the increased intensity...it will let go of some weight again. Also if you are building muscle, muscle weighs more than fat. I'm sure you're looking spectacular!!!!

Tracy

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
