Hey Guys, I haven't been able to be online much. So busy... :)

I'm 6 weeks post op. I've lost 30lbs. Seems like It's been slow at times, but I'm believing it's going to come off.

Been kind of confused on some things. I'm living in Nicaragua. I went to see my surgeon yesterday. I told him that I was using Protein Shakes for Breakfast that I had someone bring me from the states. He told me he didn't want me drinking Protein Shakes... :)

He said that they are too many calories in liquid form and won't fill me up or hold me as long and it is better to eat food and eat protein instead...

QUESTIONS:

1. HELP! I know most of you use protein shakes. Also I really wasn't told to stay away from carbs... They did tell me to make the protein a priority... What do you think?

I feel so confused. I know I have to count the protein shakes as calories, but if I have one in place of breakfast I don't see anything wrong with that. They actually hold me quite a while too. At least until lunch.< /p>

Also I feel like I'm cheating alot. The food is so different here and it is so hard to diet.

2. If I eat 4 chicken nuggets at McDonalds am I going to mess myself up?

They have 190 calories. Not bad on calories if that's all I eat for that meal... Also I can get them for a buck. We spend a lot of time on the road and it's so hard for me to eat out. When I can eat a salad it will be easier. I hate to go to a place and order a whole meal and just eat such a small portion of it.

3. If I eat some of my calories in carbs am I going to hurt my weight loss?

4. My surgeon told me not to use a straw or chew gum. Is this forever?

5. Can we use airborne? It is in those tablets that dissolve in Water. It kind of bubbles, so I didn't know if we can.

Sorry to have so many questions.... :wink0:

I really appreciate all of you and all the advice you have given me!

Eat whatever you want! If you count

your calories and count your Protein, you're doing good.I have occasionally eaten chicken nuggets

but I usually pull the breading off. I just don't like it.

I use a straw all the time. I mean all the time. I drink much better with a straw. I was never told not to. It sure hasn't hurt me.I also

chew gum all the time. It helps me

not eat. As long as you're positive

you won't swallow it, chew all the gum you want.

I also drink a Protein Drink every

morning. I like my Protein drinks.

At least I am sure of how many grams of Protein I am getting every morning.

I would stay away from bread, noodles rice, in other words, white

carbs. Those will slow your weight loss down, and make you hungry faster.

30 lbs in 6 weeks is great!

I agree with Daisy - if what you are doing is working for you - and obviously it is - 30 lbs in 6 weeks is awesome - then I would keep doing what you're doing and the next time the doctor asks, tell him you're following a healthy eating plan and leave it at that.

Hi I live in the uk and we don't use Protein Drinks at all, I an 4 weeks out and up untill now I have been eating liquidised food now I can have food that can be mashed with a fork, like fish, ground beef, chicken or pork. I always add plenty of gravey to make it easier to eat I usually have about 2oz of Protein with a tablespoon of mashed potato & the same of veg.. I try to have fruit between meals or fat free yoghurt, sugar free Jello is good also, I'm really not good at drinking my Water, but my dietitian says coffee tea & squash are ok to get my fluids up.

If you are losing weight well with what you are doing, and you are staying healthy, then it must be good for you.

Keep up the good work.....

It's weird so many surgeons have different plans, but it does seem like those in US do recommend Protein Shakes. The shake I drink is 170 calories for 35 gm of Protein. Not bad! And how else can you get 50-70 grams per day? I can't actually eat that much.

As far a airbornes goes, I tried it once and was only able to tolerate one sip. Boy that hit me fast and made me feel terrible. Maybe others can tolerate it, but I sure could not. It's definitely worse than soda.

I took something today that was like airborne. My ears plugged up at work. I felt like I was sitting on the bottom of a swimming pool. It was uncomfortable. I am sure it has something to do with allergies. My boss gave me some sort of fizzing allergy stuff and my ears cleared up right away, and it did not bother my stomach in the least.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
