Hi New Here Any Vegetarians Here?

Recommended Posts

Hi, My name is Alysha from Ventura County, CA. I'm a Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian (more lacto - then ovo :hungry: .)

My surgery is scheduled for the 26th of June with Dr. Joya in Mexico.

Was wondering what the journey was with food, weight loss, etc. for any veggies on here.

Hi Ashley, Congrates on the surgery date, I'll think of you on the 26th.

I've played with being a Lacto-Ovo (more Ovo) Vegetarian for yrs, but never made the commitment to see it through.

Post-band life is like pre-band life in that we are encouraged to eat a well balanced diet. I am having a harder time than ever getting enough protien, I'm using soy milk, eggs, and legumes mostly.

Do you cook with tofu? I would think it would have a great consistincy for the soft stage and could easily be made mushy.

I was also banded in Mx, what city does Dr. Joya practice in? I was banded in Monterrey and am enjoying returning for fills.

I'm doing surgery with Dr. Joya in Puerto Vallarta. I have a Doctor right down the street for me that I am going to post op and he does fills. Yes, I do cook with Tofu and I think it will be good but I will have to see after my surgery :- )

Hello and welcome! Although I'm not a vegetarian, my best friend is, and I spend lots and lots of time at her place cooking veggie Indian food (she's from Bombay). Indian food has some unbelievably delicious choices for vegetarians. I love Paleek Paneer (spinach with cottage cheese) and all of the yummy nutritious veggies with exotic herbs and spices. One of my favorite dishes that she makes isn't strictly "Indian", but a variation on the British Beans on toast. Let me tell you, I thought Beans on toast would be extremely horrible, but I am here to say that the way my friend makes it, ALL of our friends, including me, beg for it on a regular basis! It is literally one of the most delicious foods I've ever eaten. It's also super high in protien and Fiber and super low in fat and calories! And it's extremely fast and easy to make. Here's the recipe:

Two cans Vegetarian Baked Beans (Heinz)

1.5 or two fresh green Chili peppers, chopped

1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped

Two fresh garlic cloves, minced

One onion, chopped

One turn of the pan of olive oil

Sliced whole grain bread

Directions:

Pour about one turn of the pan with olive oil and heat. Sautee garlic, onion, and chili peppers together until all are somewhat soft. Pour baked beans into pan and cook on low to medium heat for about ten minutes to let the flavors sink in. Add in cilantro and lower heat. Simmer for five minutes.

Serve over toasted whole grain bread.

Let me know if you try it and how you like it if you do!

Hi, Alysha~

Yes, there are a number of us vegetarians here. I'm trying to remember who else is, but if you search using "vegetarian", you should find some of our posts. We've traded some recipes back and forth, but I ha ven't seen anything recently.

You've found a great support group...spend time reading through current and older posts, and you'll glean tons of great information and tips. Best of luck on your surgery and recovery!

Emily

The Boca and Morning Star products are quite tasty, high in Protein, low in carbs and easy to make. I incorporate them into most days. They may also be a resource while you build your veggie recipe database :)

I heat them on the grill and then do a squirt of Helman's Light mayo, a slice of Tomato, a pickle, a little salt and pepper and I'm set. It's just like having a hambuger--um, minus the cow and the bun :) One burger and I'm completely stuffed.

Hi all! I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian. Vegetarian foods are great with the band. I've had no problems at all yet (knock on wood). I do a lot of stirfry. Firm tofu, snap peas, Water chestnuts & carrots cooked with Pam for about 5 minutes is quick and simple. I eat 3-4 Morningstar chicken patties a week as well. Taco salad with Morningstar crumbles and black Beans is another favorite. I've been cooking a lot more since banding, which is great for the pocketbook and the waistline!

Let's keep this thread going. It's hard to find a good vegetarian bandster support system.

Take care,

Hi everyone! I'm not vegetarian but LOVE Tofu. Now that I can eat solids - I'm wanting some. Does anyone have any good easy recipes?

I make one that's really good. Cube the tofu. Fry in olive oil, then make up Frank's Red Hot sauce & butter to make a sauce, shake the tofu in it. Makes it like buffalo wings. Yummy!

Would love to hear what you all do with tofu!

Thanks!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
