Regarding antacid drugs

Recommended Posts

My surgeon (you know the one who had me pumped up with Reglan round the clock), has told me that I can take anyone of the antacids "as needed", meaning it's not required that I take it daily. I was taking prilosec every day and my tongue and mouth would dry out completely during my sleep. I decided to not take any antacid med unless I experience acid reflux. Am I putting myself at risk for stomach ulcers? It seems that many of you are required to take an antacid med at least once a day and few others don't take any. Please if you have any medical knowledge on this subject let me know. Thanks in advance.

Hi I've been told that I have to take an antacid (Lanzaprazole) 1 a day for the first 6 weeks. then I shouldn't ever need to take then again they say.

I don't have medical knowledge but wanted to share my opinion. I have found I need to still take Prilosec twice per day. If I miss my morning dose for several days (the one I always forget to take is morning) I will get more hungry and the acid discomfort in my stomach when hungry is intense plus I get some reflux. If I take Prilosec it is ok.

I have not been able to find complications from long term Prilsec use until about 5 years of taking it. I am the type of prevention instead of complication. Why take the chance? I would take it a little while longer just to be sure your staple line is fully healed. An ulcer can be devestating if it is at the staple line.

Just my humble opinion.

Dr Aceves recommended 3 months at least. I guess every surgeon has his/her own theory about it.

It is my belief that the sleeve surgery reduces the risk of stomach ulcers. I don't have acid reflux or heartburn so am only taking chewable Calcium that say they are also an antacid. (No, not Tums)

So feel fine with that arrrangement.

But, I would ask your surgeon's coordinator, if concerned, as they are a source of medical knowledge or can find out for you. :001_cool:

My doc didn't prescribe anything as "mandatory" right after surgery. But after my first visit, and I was haveing heartburn issues... he prescribed nexium.

I only take it on how I feel-and it is better.... I might take it once a week...chinese food- I take it beforehand!

Thanks Chancie, So you take it on an as needed basis. Per chance, any side effects like dry mouth or anything?

We are supposed to take calcium citrate. the chewable antiacids are Calcium carbonate which is not absorbed easily.

Calcium citrate is easily absorbed but you aren't supposed to take it at the same time as your PPI acid preventer.

HI Lan-

I don't notice any side effects at all- and like I said I don't use it very often, but I carry a pill case in my purse with that and my daily Vitamins for just in case I forgot them, and the nexium for just in case I need it.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
