Getting everything in order

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am scheduled for my surgery on December 17th. I am trying to get all my ducks in a row since this is going to be so close to the holidays. I am wondering what advise you have as far as what is good to purchase and plan for now, so that afterwards everything will be already done. I have bought 6 boxes of Carnation Instant Breakfast and ordered another 8 to be delivered. I also bought 12 cans of various Soup broth. I know I need to get chewable vitamins too. Is there anything else I am not thinking of? BTW, I am allergic to aspartame (NutraSweet) so anything I do buy must have Splenda in it so no SF Jello or pudding :(

Thanks!

Truthfully I wouldn't purchase too much before your surgery because after your surgery your tastes may change, you may become lactose intolerant, etc. I found Lipton makes the flavored packets you can add to Water that are made with splenda instead of aspartame - they have lots of flavors - the best price I found them for was at Target. They don't have any Protein in them; however, if you get tired of drinking plain water, they're a nice change.

I buy the adult chewable vitamins at costco - they're pretty tasty.

You might want to have some paper tape and bandages for when you get home. The glue from reg tape made my skin blister.

Watered down juice was good. I also liked the little seasoning packs from Ramen Noodles added to hot Water. It makes a good broth and you can take the packs with you for convience when you go out.

I just realized I had some stuff on hand that I could easily use pre or post op...

You may want to try something call Secure Complete Meal Replacement. When I got it, I had a variety pack that had 30 meals for like $9.99 or something ridiculous. I can't find that specific site that had that deal, but they are around 70 calories and have 7g of Protein for each shake packet. I have had this for about 6 months... lol... I am finally going to use it!

I also had a Trim Advantage (this is from AmWay) body system starter kit (box wasn't even open) and it has Protein power, shake mixes and protein bars!

I am thinking since the Amway stuff has Protein Bars, to do this during pre-op and if I can survive on that and regular stuff, I will leave the Secure stuff which is actually yummy for the post op...

Go figure!

I don't know what to do for clear liquid other than boring stuff... ugh.

Good luck! My surgery is just a day after yours.

Aimee

You can get the Secure Meal Replacements on HSN.com or on Andrew Lessman's website - it is very good - I loved it - before surgery - now I can't stand the texture (too thick) of any of the Protein powders I used to drink before surgery ... hopefully you're tastes won't change drastically like mine did. I keep trying Protein Shakes every month or so to see if things have changed; so far, no luck. Good luck with your pre-op and post-op diet!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
