Danish Pastry

Okay, maybe this should be going under the food forum, still...

We're not really supposed to eat bread, so, I've stayed away from it since being banded, (last August). Not easy, I'm sure you'll agree.

But... Do pastry products such as (what you crazy Americans call) a "Danish" count as bread? I know I won't lose weight eating them, but will they potentially expand my pouch in the way bread products do?

I'm sure there are both experienced and knowledgeable bandsters out there with a definitive answer to this conundrum,

Andy I've never heard that bread will expand the pouch. The reason people stay away from it other than carbs is that it gets stuck, golfball feeling, pain.

I for one eat bread and have no problem with it (as long as i take small bites and chew it to mush).

For a healthier choice, eat a slice of toast rather than the danish... there's probably more sugar and crap in the danish than a slice of bread.

Some one correct me if I"m wrong please.

Yup, it's bread, and very high-calorie-high-carb-sweet-not-very-good-for-weight-loss bread. You are much better off having some type of whole wheat/whole grain roll with a meal if you must have bread.

On the other hand, I could eat a danish, one small sweet succulent sticky yummy delicious bite at a time. Well chewed, it goes down just fine. That's me and my fill level though. I don't eat them because I can't lose weight on them, not because I might cause any damage.

Thanks for your answers.

I really was informed by my dietician that bread can s--t--r--e--t--c--h the pouch, but she may have said that as a sneaky way of keeping me away from carbs. :biggrin1:

I'd never heard of bread stretching the pouch before ether, but it makes sense. I've found that I can only eat 1/4 of a sandwich before becoming extremely full...it's not the shaved turkey filling me up now is it? Bread could expand in the pouch, thus the over full pain and the pouch stretching. I'll be removing bread from my marketing list!

If you have a craving for a Danish, try a thin piece of wheat bread, toasted, smeared with lo fat cream cheese, maybe a little SF preserves. Small bites!!

Hmm, what I was told is that they don't want you to eat bread (or anything that expands with liquid) because it expands when wet and can get "stuck" more easily causing the dreaded "pb's". Also the high calorie, carbs thing is another reason to stay away. That said, I can't eat the pastry things, however, I can eat things like scones when taking very small bites.

Hey, I forgot to ask, what is a Danish called in the UK?

It's simply called "Danish Pastry" and never shortened to "Danish"... Maybe we're too close to Denmark to be allowed the contraction. :)

Cause then eating a danish would just be a completely different thing! LOL

I agree that if you must have bread, go the whole grain route. The carbs are less for one thing than processed white flour and it is not coated in tons of liquified powdered sugar.

Droool. I ate half a Danish the other morning for mothers day breakie. But I had just run 4kms! it went down more easily than bread.< /p>

Scones! OMG I tried to eat a scone, it was like cake for me. No golfball in the chest, it doesnt get stuck there, but hurts like heck going through the actual stoma. Its weird, because it doesnt get stuck, just really hurts. I get no desire to PB, no sliming, just pain as it passes through. Whereas with anything else I've eaten that's gotten stuck I get the typical symptoms.

You know whats really good and helps the sweet tooth. Toast, lightly buttered with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a pinch of sugar (cinnamon toast). It really takes the edge off and since its toasted its easier to get down (for me that is).

I could not eat ANY of those things...with the exception of heavily buttered crispy bread crusts...which seemed at odds with the whole program.

However, I popped into top let you know that in DENMARK, a "danish" is called "Vienna Bread." Except that they say it in Danish, of course.

(Heck I say if you want, give it a try but I bet it'll clog up your esophagus. I've tried bread since being banded and it's usually and eye watering PB'ing good time....I actually don't even WANT bread anymore...it's just not worth it)

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
