Help ... coughing up black gunk

Recommended Posts

Me too. I thought about you today when I opened the thread and we still hadn't gotten an update. Scary! But glad you are doing better and that your band is still working for you.

Dianamae- Definitely give a personal trainer a shot at you before you find a surgeon. We all love our bands, but we love them because all other avenues led to weight gain. Try everything before you try surgery. And if you get banded, you'll know it is money well spent.

Toodles, y'all

Brenda

Julie, so glad you're OK!! Blood from the mouth, no matter what it looks like, is definitely scary indeed. What lay people don't know is that it can be caused by all sorts of minor things, not just serious ones.

Thank goodness it wasn't serious in your case, Julie. Take care and feel better soon!!

Julie - I'm so glad to hear that they found out what the problem was and that it wasn't your band. Bless your heart. You must have gone through some rough days. Hopefully that's behind you now. Did they suggest you go on liquids for a while because of the esophagus? Just curious.

DonnaB - That was excellent advice. Couldn't agree more.

Hey Syl, welcome to LBT.

It's very normal to be scared of surgery - any surgery. There are a lot of people here who have been in your shoes and can share their experiences. You should start a new thread with your questions in the Indroduction Forum so more folks will see them.

Best of luck in your journey. :)

Hello.. I've been an occasional "lurker" at this site but thought I'd share my recent complication with others. I was banded in December of 2006, had my first fill of 1.1 cc two months later and as of yesterday lost a total of 34 lbs. I started at 195 and now weigh 161 lbs.

After fill, I had some restriction, steadily lost at an average of 1.2 lbs./week but two months ago spontaneusly began getting tighter, pbing with great frequency and the last two weeks could eat little to nothing and finally, not even Water would go down. I WAS SO MISERABLE!!!!

I flew to my doctor and had a fluroscope (?)/barium check. No slippage, no stretched pouch -- I simply had so much swelling that nothing could go down and I was 1 cc of the initial 1.1 cc was unfilled. The relief and comfort was almost immediate. The "coffee grounds" and dark sputum is in fact blood from a very irritated esophogus or blood vessel.

When I started the pbing, I should have immediately gone to total liquids and not created the viscious cycle of pbing, swelling, pbing and swelling that resulted in total closure of the opening.

I will return probably in July and the dr. recommended a slight fill of .4 cc. Sometimes spontaneous tightening due to weight loss, stress occurs and the pbing/swelling cycle exacerbates it. I am less worried about weight gain right now then I am about not getting in adequate fluids and nutrition.

Just thought I'd share my experience.

Black coffee ground secretions is a sign of old bleeding. You may have had GI bleeding at one time or it still may be actively bleeding (but this is usually bright red). At anyrate, if you are having symptoms on top of spitting this stuff up I would go to the doctor immediately. Hope all is well and good luck.

Hi Julie

Hope you went to see your doctor. Usually when you have coffee grind looking stuff in your emesis means you're having some bleeding in your stomach. Sounds like you might have an ulcer or something going on but you really see your doctor to make the diagnosis.

I went to see my surgeon and she wasn't convenienced that the diagnosise given in the ER was accurate. She did a small unfill and scheduled me for additional tests. I must say I haven't thrown up once since the unfill, so she is probably right on.

Dear Jackiehailely, No, everyone does not cough up black junk. This was quite rare and the DR.s are on top of it now, as they should be. Read the details of this thread and see the concern of everyone. This forum is for support, not diagnosis and that is just what took place here!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
