protein shakes-I'm going to starve!

Recommended Posts

I drank the "boost" drinks and "ensure" also I drank the powder whey drinks. It wasnt so bad. Right now im on the 1 week of Clear Liquids post op and have been drinking those "protine bullets" because they are clear. Now that is a terrible drink. I almost threw up a couple times :) I bought 3 weeks supply and as it turns out I only needed about 10 days at the most. Dont know what to do with the rest :crying:

Does anyone use Dr. Atkins ready to drink Protein Shakes? or Insure?

Judy - I LOVED the Atkins RTD Protein shakes before my surgery; however I can't tolerate them at all since my surgery. I also tried Ensure - I got one or two down before they made me gag. The nice thing about the Ensure is that they are in small cans so easier to get them down than the larger drinks.< /strong>

Hi Lucy-

I find the powders are much better. I put a scoop of vanilla Isopure brand in, add frozen fruits, ice, and skim milk or yogurt (depending on your desired thickness) and blend! and you can barely taste the powder. If the powder makes the consistancy add 1/2 scoop, and just add little scoops here and there to compensate. I love frozen blackberries, mango, raspberries. Makes the best shakes ever!! Also, I've been drinking Isopure brand Fruit drinks with 40 grams of Protein and 160 cals per 20 oz. bottle. And I personally think they are very tasty.

Let me know if you try that stuff and how it works out for you!

You are doing just about the same thing that I have been doing. I have only tried banana and pineapple fruit in mine. I also have tried some walnuts and pecans. I wanted to let you know that when I received my pre-op diet from my surgeon's office, I read on there that the milkshake should have 20-35 grams of Protein in each one. It warned about using those with high amounts of protein, because Mega-dose Protein Drinks in excess of 40 grams per serving may cause kidney damage. I don't know how true that is I have not read up on it, but I don't want to take any chances without knowing for sure. It also said that the Whey protein is easier digested and absorbed than soy protein. So I am keeping this in mind when drinking the shakes. I got my protein from GNC and I really like the flavors. They are really expensive, but I found them on sale, so I paid about $25 each tub. The serving size is 3 scoops, which has 60 grams in each serving, so I use 1 1/2 scoops which gives me 30 grams. It is really important to check out that information on all the tubs, and adjust your serving scoop size accordingly. I am very glad the fellow at GNC pointed this out to me, he was a big help in my search. Have a great day.

Right after surgery, warm Protein Soups worked well for me, I could not tolerate any artificial sweetners, my stomach was too sensitive.

Now, I drink only nectar Fuzzy Naval and plain unjury w/Crystal light. I don't like the milkly type shakes. Too many memories of years trying to lose wt with chocolate slim fast.

This is going to be completely personal, everyone is so different in how they react to them after the surgery. Be prepared with several different things, try them prior to surgery, getting the samples is a great idea.

You will totally love being sleeved, once you are past liquids, mushies, and on regular foods, it is amazing, but 800 calories will totally satisfy you..There may be head hunger, if you are a true food addict, like me. But, this is darn close to a miracle.

I find that since my sleeve operation that things seem a lot sweeter to me. I dont know if thats because of the liquid diet or what but one drink I enjoyed was "ensure" but eversense the operation I find them way to sweet for me ..... but thats a good thing as pop and sweets were a big part of my downfall in the first place

People seem to say that all the time.

I really wish that was the case for me!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
