Everyone has probably heard of the H1N1 crisis. Well where I live the vaccine for H1N1 is available next week. My question is ...Next week is one week before my surgery. Do I risk getting sick? Will I get sick? What happens to my schedualed surgery? My workplace is strongly encourging everyone get the vaccine. I am so confused. I did send Nina (Dr. Aceves) a message to get some feedback on my concerns. Anyone else facing this or anyone had the vaccine already?:)

Well, I'm not an expert on the situation but my strong belief is "if it's not broke, don't fix it" . . I'm not a believer in vaccines like the flu shot or the swine shot, I'd rather have natural immunity. . . all I can say is that this vaccine is still considered an experiemental vaccine. . . the choice is yours. . but it's good you talked to Dr. Aceves. . . he'll guide you in the right direction. . . good luck. . .

IMO, We don't have any info on long term effects, the H1N1 flu is just that, a flu. Hundreds of people die every year from the flu. If you don't have an underlying immunity problem, then don't take a chance. I am a nurse, and where I work they are trying to mandate the vaccine. Not gonna happen! We know too much. Without long term studies, I'm not getting anything put into my body! Just my opinion.

I'm glad you emailed Nina. I'm sure they will give you the best advice. For myself, and my son, we do not get the flu vaccine, nor will we get the H1N1 vaccine. My husband is required to get both due to being in the military. I told him it's just great that the military members are the gov'ts lab rats for all of those vaccines. He gets one vaccine( I can't remember which one it is), but it forms a blister on his skin, then it opens and oozes everywhere. We're not allowed to have any physical contact when it opens because I could contract the virus he's being injected with. ICKY.

Yep, I would just see what the doc says. The H1N1 vaccine is relatively new, so me personally am afraid to take it. I am a nurse and I do take the seasonal flu shot but I feel comfortable with it because its well researched, etc. But the H1N1, I dont know anything about that shot.....

I'm with the others-Tiff-thinoneday-soontobeskinny=

Not getting it.....I got a flu shot about 12 years ago, and I know all the research says you won't get sick from the shot- but I DID. It hit me within 30 minutes from getting the shot and I was soooo very sick.

All the doctors say you won't get sick and if you do- you were going to get sick anyway. Well- I was COMPLETLY HEALTHY and don't believe it...... and don't wanna take that chance again.

So........... no flu shot for meeeeeeeeeeeee.

I wouldn't risk it prior to surgery. I wouldn't have it anyway unless I was high risk with all that mercury in it. I'm neither a doctor or a nurse but I am highly suspicious of all vaccinations now.

I certainly am not getting that shot, even tho I am going to Mexicao in January...I have good immunity and haven't even had a real cold in many years let alone a flu of any kind.

So no, for me, to such a new vaccine laden with Thimerasol - the preservative loaded with mercury!

It is not available here yet. I have already had the flu shot but not the H1N1. As a severe asthmatic, I am in the high risk category and I work with adolecents and children everday. I have surgery in three days so will not be getting the H1N1 before Mexico. I don't know whether I will have the vacccine later or not. I'd be interested on Dr. Aceves' advice on this topic.

From everything I've heard, i.e., it's a live virus, mercury, etc., there's no way I'd get it -and definitely not 1 week before surgery --let us know what Dr. Aceves has to say about it.

Just to clarify, only the nasal version, which is given to some children, is a live virus. The other versions are all killed, just like the regular flu shot. There are some companies that are making a version that lacks the thimerosol (mercury) but I doubt there will be much of that available.

I'm one month out from my VSG and am not taking either flu vaccine yet...with the lack of balanced nutrients and shock of surgery, I just don't think I have an optimal immune system yet to take it. Maybe in a month. Still thinking on it. At work when I am with any patients who has a respiratory complaint, I wear an N95 mask, as recommended by my employer, wash wash wash hands, keep them away from my face, etc etc..

I've received both the seasonal flu and H1N1 vaccine and had no problems with either. The nasal spray is a live vaccine and the injectable is NOT. I'm a nurse and close to 1000 employees have received either the H1N1 injectable or Flumist. I am not aware of anyone having any problem with either. There's a lot of "opinions" on this subject, but I'd encourage you to seek the advice of your surgeon and/or the CDC.

Hello everyone.....thanks for all the advice....I did hear back from Dr. Aceves...he okay the H1N1 vaccine. Like Norma, in my profession I work with children and families, and I am in the high risk category. My family doctor recommended (he and his family got it) and with Dr. Aceves blessings I got the shot and I feel fine.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
