Help! Just newly sleeved

Recommended Posts

Hi Ive read the forums for months and now I'm 2 days post op, and I'm getting real nervous since I cant keep much down. The Soups will not stay in the sleeve, I'm trying to drink as much as possible but fear i am going to be dehydrated soon. Also I have a burning sensation everytime I eat or drink. anyone out there that can help me? I'm still in the hospital and scared to go home.

Have you told the hospital staff about what is going on? I didn't have any type of Soup until after I cleared 17 days of clears. Not everyone can progress as fast on the post-op diet. Your body has been traumatized, and it may not like what you are putting in the sleeve.

If the hospital staff knows what is going on, demand to have a ct scan, or a leak test performed, something because you are your best advocate for excellent healthcare. Do NOT allow anyone to tell that it is 'normal' or that you are 'fine' when you feel like you are not. You do not want to get dehydrated, as you mentioned.

Melanie,

It might just be the second day. I couldn't keep anything down on day two and several others that was sleeved when I was, was sick on the second day too. The nurses gave us something in our IV that helped a lot. Hope you feel better soon.

The burning, is it in your throat? If so, that may be from the intubation. My throat was VERY sore for several days. I am still a little horse from it. I am 7 days post. I am really suprised they gave you soup! I was on clears for 4 days and then Soups, watery, no lumps Soup. I can only tolorate one oz at this time. fine by me as I do not want to eat anyway. I am forcing the water/liquids.

I agree with Tiffany - speak up and keep speaking up until someone listens and does something - if the results show nothing is wrong, at least you'll know it and feel calmer about it hopefully. Keep us posted.

I agree...best to get tested for a leak, and it is it negative then you can get some advice from your physician on what to do to be more comfortable. Are you on a PPI such as nexium?

Dr Aceves keeps his patients on Clear Liquids for 10 days...which includes clear broth (not Soup with anything in it). If you know what to expect, you won't be so worried when symptoms occur. Did your surgeon give you any instructions to read, or information on what to expect, dietary changes to follow after your surgery?

Thanks to everyone who answered. My surgery was early Tues.morning and my doc started me on full liquids Wed. I am really not sure why he's rushing this diet except maybe because we did Clear Liquids for 14 days prior to surgery. They hooked me back up to an I.V last night due to dehydration. I'm also gonna try and push the Water more. I'm not on Nexum but on Reglan and Protonix. I'm hoping for a better day today.:001_smile: Thanks everyone, I've learned so much from this forum.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
