Does anyone know how long it take for the staple line to heal completely? What has everyone's post op diet been like?

my Xray is cool looking. can not see the staple line exactly, just the shape of my new stomach and no leaks. My diet is a bit on a struggle to know what is right to eat now. I am on liquids still. I am 7 days post. I am liking most watery Soups. Hot herbal teas. Popcycles. Jello. really do not want to eat much. and then when I do it is about an ounce. that is all. amazing. and I am not hungry. gotta love that.

I can't remember what my surgeon said about how long it takes for the staple line to completely heal. My post-op diet was as follows (this differs somewhat from the guidelines my surgeon provided before surgery because he was concerned after surgery due to my hernia repair):

-full liquids from day 2-14

-mushy/soft food from day 14 until 7.5 weeks

-solid food (but still does not want me to swallow pills) from 7.5 weeks

I hope when I get mine done I can still take my pills. I have to take 7 pills a day for the rest of my life. Maybe I can crush them or something.

Oh, yes. I didn't mean to scare anyone. You can crush pills as long as they're not time released from what I remember. And I know a lot of people choose this surgery because they are basically the same as before surgery with just a smaller stomach, so that would include taking your pills.

I've read of many people taking pills a lot earlier than I am right now. It was at my 2 month check up and I asked the nurse if I can take pills (forgot to ask the surgeon and didn't want to wait until he was done with the patient he was with) and she said that he likes us with staple lines to wait until 3-6 months out. I cannot remember why now. Since I do not HAVE to take any pills, I wasn't too concerned. I have been taking my Bariatric Advantage Vit. D since I returned home from the hospital because they told me it dissolves before hitting the stomach.

Just ask your surgeon, or maybe someone more knowledgeable will jump in here.

OK I have not had the sleeve yet. Tell me about the staples. Do they just stay there forever or are they some special material that disolves?

They are titanium and they stay there forever - eventually tissue grows over them and you they won't even be seen on xrays - since they are titanium, there's no issue with MRIs, CT-scans or going through any type of security, like at the airport.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
