Almost 3 weeks of Liquids!!!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on May 5th. I am so hungry! My DR wants me on liquids for 4 weeks. I can not do it. It seems like all Drs are different, some say liquids for 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks etc. Figures my Dr said 4 weeks!!! I have had mushies already and I feel great. Since some DRs say less time, I cheated...I have had cottage cheese, american cheese, mashed potatoes & a scrambled egg. I have been eating cream of wheat since the first week. I am ready for some food. Is tuna fish with mayo considered mushy? I feel like I am ready for it but I am scared. Any advise?

my doc listed fish as a mushy food. also, i will let you know, my surgeon is dr. spivak,(houston,tx) and his office released me to begin solids just past my second week post-op. i was reminded at the visit to chew well, and to only eat the amount of food that would fit in one 8oz cup. I think i had originally been prescribed mushies for 4 weeks or so. it is hard to recall as they did not hold me to the original plan. i had absolutely NO problems with solids. i was very paranoid though, and chewed chewed chewed. the food might as well have been mushy. by the time i finished chewing, it wasn't even enjoyable anymore.

good luck.

Hey Robin, sorry you doc wanted you on 4 weeks of liquid, but there you go. Part of me wants to know how many folks were banded by your doc, and the type of follow up they provide.

It is so very difficult to be on liquids for so long, especially since we have a psychological need to eat, not just to satify hunger in our belly.

And yes, canned tuna with mayo is considered a "soft" food.

I wouldn't do tuna fish yet (too dry & brittle.) Robyn, we all know you're an intelligent woman that makes wise choices so take this with a grain of salt, okay? When I was newly banded, my head swam in so many different post-diet opinions till I couldn't think straight. Why does one doc say a week of liquids while another says 3 weeks? So I wrote down all the rules from all the different doctors, then I asked everyone around here what their post-op rules were. From that I averaged out a plan that I could live with. I stayed on Clear Liquids for 7 days (broth, Jello, ice pops, diluted cranberry/apple juice. The 2nd week I introduced thick liquids like V8, Protein shakes, cream Soups blended (omg, they were soooo good and satisfying by then.) 3rd week I added mashed taters, refries, cottage cheese, liverwurst. I was eating bits of chicken and steamed veggies by my 4th week.

Think about it and ask yourself which doctor is right? Who knows, right? I think your doc wants you on liquids for rapid weight loss, which lots of doctors do to boost their own egos. "Oh, my patients lost 30 pounds the first month." Make sense?

I.M.H.O.......

If you are making your own rules now, what are you going to do down the road?

My DOC said 3 weeks liquids, two weeks mushies. I did 3 weeks liquids, two weeks mushies. Othere people doctor said different things. Their Doctor didn't do my surgery, so I listened to my doctor.

Doing it my way got me fat!

As I said, I.M.H.O.

Good Luck...

If you're having a hard time doing the prescribed diet, call the MD or his/her dietician and explain your difficulty. I hate yogurt so they let me substitute lite ricotta cheese. I was also moved up to a soft diet 4 days early and stayed on that until I could have regular food at week 5. When in doubt, give your MD a call and listen to your body.

Yo , I aggree with others, follow the plan. I did three wks liquids, two weeks musshies, and just got my first fill of 3cc's. I have faithfully followed the pland and have to date lost -61lbs yep thats right -61.

You paid the Doc to do this to you,it just stands to reason that you should follow his advice. Everyone is different there are no two of us alike. Each person has lost their weight at a different rate and your Doc knows you best.

I also aggree that if you are making up your own game plan now, what is going to happen when things get really tough and all support is no longer around you. I am now seven weeks postop and here is what I have done,

1)Followed the Docs rules to the letter

2)did not believe I would survive the liquids part(BUT DID

3)Got into a great support group here local

4)Read this web daily and see all the crap people are doing to themselves that will get them back to where they started(BIG BIG BIG

5)Have resolved that only I can change(Change is not change unless YOU change)

Oh, different Rockin Robin! Dang I was confused.

There's another user on here with that name, spelled differently, who also recently had surgery - to place a port.

The best advice anyone can give is to follow Dr's orders.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
