I love this forum. Everyday I check new postings. I can find the answers to any questions I have on this site. I am having VSG surgery in Victoria by Dr. Amson. The surgery is covered by our BC Medical. Because the surgery is covered it is a long wait list. I am going on my 4 th year in waiting, from my first consult appointment. I innitially was waiting for RNY but switched to VSG last summer. My surgery is Nov. 18th.

I can't wait to start my journey.

WOW Angela. You are a trooper for waiting 4 years for surgery. My hat is off to you. I almost had a fit waiting 4.5 months.

Welcome. Be sure to put your surgery on the calendar and let us know how you are doing leading up.

Wow, 4 years to wait. That is incredible and we have people in Washington thinking we should emulate parts of the Canadian healthcare system. What if you wanted to self-pay? Is that allowed in the Canadian system or would you have to come to the US or Mexico? I am happy for you, your wait is almost over. Good luck with everything.

Bill

Congrats on working the system Angela! There is such a long wait in Canada because there just aren't many surgeons that do this surgery and very few private clinics - I know of one in Montreal that is very expensive. For bariatric surgery, because it is not 'life threatening', a wait of 3-5 years is quite common. There certainly are some flaws in our healthcare system but I certainly would not trade it for the American system as it is now! I will get off of my soapbox now... I did not choose to go through the long wait and went to Mexico as a self-pay - so glad that I did! Good luck Angela - how long will you be in the hospital?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
