My doctor doesn't think I am losing fast enough, and he may be right. I have a lot of head hunger. Last week my *experiement* with *good* carbs was a disaster, it lead to eating ice cream, chocolate, bread..and no wt loss, gain 1 lbs. I am back to basis now, Protein, protein, veggies, water..but I am really pressed to lose another 10 lbs before 10/31. I am seeing my doctor then and what if I went to one of those wt loss clinics and got an Rx for phentermine, just for the next 3 weeks, and just see if I can live off Unjury and salads? I so want to lose this wt, tired of the head games I play with myself.

I hated the insomnia that the appetite suppressants gave me. I have taken them off and on for so many years, and they just make me feel awful.

I know you want to lose the weight, but my experience has always been to gain it right back when using these type of products.

Do it right the first time, and you won't have to lose it twice. Just my $0.02.

I, personally, think that is a terrible idea. The idea of the sleeve is to be able to eat normal, just less. You need to eat more than Unjury and salads -- you need to be sure to get in your Protein and limit your carbs and get in your fluids, and your weight will begin to come off again -- even possibly 10 lbs. by 10/31. I agree with Tiff - do it right the first time, and you won't have to take it off twice. Good luck to you.

Bad Bad idea in my opinion. All I've ever seen is patients who take those drugs, lose some weight, then gain it all back PLUS MORE afterwards. Some develop serious side effects as well.

Just work your sleeve program, write everything down to be sure your protein/fluid/calorie intake are as prescribed, track your exercise, and only weigh yourself once a week. Eventually when your body is ready the weight will come off. Stop being so hard on yourself.

I know why you want the phentermine, I went to a meeting with a Dr. about sleeve in mid August. He talked mostly about Band. He said he has had great results using phentermne when people are not loosing (fast)enough. I was flabbergasted. He had only done 6 sleeves and was really pushing the band. (He reccomended band first then sleeve). You know phen is such a bad idea. You can get hooked on that darn stuff so easy, and then what happens when you don't loose on the phen? Look at the long term, stop with the icecream and get eating sleeve-wise! You can do this we will all support you. Keep coming back.

I think it's important to use this period to learn to eat properly for the rest of your life and develop a love for something exercise-like.

I kept my weight loss up there by exercise -- every time my weight loss slowed down, I upped my exercise. I think that's better for the long term than phentermine, which I worry is not as safe as people think. (All the diet drugs up until now have ended up being taken off the market due to safety issues.)

Steph,

I have to admit I agree with everyone else that the phentermine is a bad idea. When I went in for my first initial appt. on WLS one of the items required was a psychological "clearance." Does your insurance cover any type of mental health? Maybe look to talk to someone about behavior modification. I am keeping this in the back of my mind just in case it is something I find that I need in the future if I find myself in the same situation. Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress!

I agree with what everyone has said above. Phentermine is a bad idea. Unless you want to have to lose it twice, as someone said. And, as someone else said - it's almost certainly less safe than they think.

Why is the 31st so important?? Sip sip sip, eat Protein, then veggies, sip some more... and take a walk.

Of course, I recognize this is easy for me to say, since I've not had my surgery yet, and I'm sitting here swilling a DC, but I've also been on phentermine... and here I am today, waiting for surgery, and at my all time highest weight.

Nuff said! Except: hang in there, you CAN do this!!

You guys are so right. It is a bad idea..since I got back on track I have been losing again and the hunger is gone, even the head hunger, except right before bed time. That was always my danger zone. It is something I have to learn to deal with. down to 181 from 213 right now. Oct 31st is the 3 mo mark my doctor set for me, and it is very indicative of if you will make your goal. If I can get down to 173, then I will have lost 40 lbs, 1/2 of what I need to lose. So, that gives me another 3 mos to lose the last 40 lbs. After 6 mos, it all slows down. I thank you all for your support. If diet pills worked, we would have all been skinney. I did the phen/fen thing back in the 90's. I lost about 20 lbs and stalled big time..head hunger again. Regarding counseling, I do talk to Tara from LapSF monthly and prn as needed. But, you know what, I really do believe carbs just lead to more carbs, especially for those that are insulin resistent like me. Thanks again, you guys are awesome.

yea! so glad to hear you are back on track. I am going to take to heart you comment aboutthe carbs leading to hunger. I had not thought of that. I will now give carbs the "evil" designation in my mind. What a battle, thanks for the weapon!

Steph, don't take those deadlines *that* seriously. They are just trends and averages. What I mean is, if you end up losing 48% of your excess weight instead of 50%, you aren't doomed to failure!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
