I see this protein powder is really expensive. How much do I need to buy? I'm waiting for a surgery date, and want to be ready. Is this something I'll need from now on, to get my protien? I read that most use the shakes daily, to get the proper protein intake. Will I need this with the clear liquid diet during the 10 day post surgery? Please give me as much information abot what to do with the powder, how to mix it, what to mix it with, during the different stages of recovery. THank you

Judy, (I presume)

I don't know all the answers as I just ordered it, I will have it here next week, and then I can tell you more about that. I am assuming like most shakes it is with 4 oz or so of Water (I add ice) to one scoop of mix and shake in a tupperware type tall container (need a good seal)

I drank the Protein Shake I have now since day one. I am assuming that we may need the extra Protein for the 1st 6 months or so anyway, until out stomachs are capable of handliing a lot more food. It is just a tool to help us keep our muscles from deteriorating as they need the protein the most. afte a bit I will mix mine with skim milk, I think.

They look like declicious flavors, I ordered the 6 pks hoping that is all the protein powder I will need, as I still have some here from Walmart with a vanilla icecream flavor. I like it, but it is not this high of a quality that is for sure.

But hon, it is entirely up to you - just thinking this might be a great choice for many of this board.

Hope that helps,

cheers,

Donna

Donna, I'll be interested to know how they taste, the texture, and ever so importantly the smell. I've tried yet another 3 types of Protein powders, and took them all back to GNC. This time I went for soy Protein, and was absolutely disgusted. . .

I am now on my 20th brand and type. John used this one while he was overseas, and it's a whey protein. Fingers crossed this one works for me that we bought yesterday. The ladies at GNC are getting sick of me bringing crap back to them.

Have you tried Jay Robb whey Protein powder? I love the chocolate flavor, made with lactaid fat free milk and a few drops of banana extract. It's a treat for me.

Judy, during the clear stage I used GNC unflavored Protein powder and mixed it with crystal light, K20 Protein Water, and SF Hawaiin punch. There are the nectar drinks that are also allowable for the clear stage. You should check out the thread in the food section that shows where to order samples. If you can stand the taste, (the taste never bothered me) You should try to get protein in even during the clear stage.

My favorite for the full liquid stage is the PVL brand Whey Gourmet Peanut Butter and chocolate that you order from Netrition.com

I'm with you Tiff - tried again on Sunday - had diarrhea from 7 Sunday evening until about 2 on Monday ... they all have milk in them and I'm so lactose intolerant since the surgery -- noticed all the powders I have in the kitchen also contain milk ... so won't be using those ... wonder if there are any GOOD ones around that don't contain milk ... lactaid doesn't seem to work for me. I'll be interested to see what you think of these Stoongal.

Hmmmm it is my understanding that most whey IS a byproduct of milk, except soy whey, I believe, but yes, I will be sure to look for that when I get my order and let you know.

That such shocks are not so good for health are totally unfounded. These supplements, like other supplements are mere additions to your daily meals. You can eat like a meal after training or as a snack. This does not mean however that you depend on your overall nutrition. Include Protein shakes to your daily diet and you will surely maximum muscle growth. Be consistent with your training and you will definitely see results within a few weeks.

I purchased the 6-pack before my surgery - chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, Peanut Butter, banana, and grape.

So far I've only tried the strawberry and Peanut Butter and they were both very tasty! However, they have like 19g of carbs per serving so I think I'm going to save these for when I get my ice cream maker and just eat them for a treat and not as a meal/shake.

It says right on the container "Use this product as a food supplement only. Do not use for weight reduction."

It is from milk. It says on the container "Great Tasting whey Protein Mix from Grass Fed Cows".

Protein shakes, you can only get a lot of Protein at the same time without eating much food. In order to shake off, throw a ball or a multiple dose powder shaker bottle or blender. Mix in a blender if you decide to add other ingredients. These extra ingredients to add extra calories to your shake. It can also act on its own muscle building meal. Then, just add some more fruit or a glass of milk powder. Start the blender and blend and drink. Let stand in refrigerator for several hours, then cold.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
