Lentil Soup

Recommended Posts

I made this this afternoon, and it is so delicious I thought I would share it here.

Doesn't even need blending as it kinda turns to a kind of puree if it is cooked long enough.

1 Onion chopped and suteed in Olive oil (about 1 tbsp) for 5 minutes.

6 cups of Water (called for beef broth but I only had bouillon cubes)

3 lg bouillon cubes (I used McCormicks Gourmet alll-Vegetable beef style)

1 1/3 cups dry red lentils

1/4 cup or so Tomato paste

1 tsp Italian Seasoning

pepper to taste

Add broth to the onions till boiling then add rest of the ingredients,

turn heat down low and simmer about an hour, stirring occasionally.

I must confess I found about 1/3 cup of leftover raost beef gravy in my freezer and I threw that in for good measure as the fat had been removed.

I can hardly keep out of this - it is that good!

much more Protein that potato or Tomato Soup which is what I was going to make.

Sounds yummy - I don't have all the ingredients required though, so can't make it tonight - I'm not feeling good and it would probably taste good and help soothe my tummy.

Thank for sharing!

This sounds so good. Can we have this on clears or full liquids?

Good question!

Under Dr. Aceves post-op it would be okay on full liquids, but not clears. Just be sure there are no chunks - might want to blend it just to be sure - or strain it.

It would probably be okay on full liquids (according to Dr. Aceves' plan) if you blend it or strained it to remove even the miniscule parts.

Well it passed the test, hubby stuck up his nose when I said we are having lentil Soup for supper. He ate two big bowls of it and even said it was real good!

I feel so happy when that happens!

Add a teaspoon of ground cumin to the Soup at the beginning. When you serve it, put in some fresh lemon juice and garnish with a bit of fresh coriander. If you though it was good before, you will really love it with these additions. I let patients have this fairly early in the post-op course.

I think it was due to the fact that I tried to drink a Protein drink (again) and my lactose intolerance has just gone nuts since surgery ... plus it was still way to thick and the texture almost made be puke ... so I have now scratched Protein drinks made with milk (which most are) off my list.

I'm fine now - once it all got out of my system, I was fine.

Thanks for the concern! I will be making that Soup as soon as I get the ingredients!

I love milk and am also lactose intolerant, even before my sleeve surgery. I just chew about 5 lactaid tablets before the first swallow of milk or cream soup, and there is NO problem. I also use lactaid milk when ever possible, then there is no need to chew the ladtaid tablets at all.

has anyone tried this Soup yet?

Thanks Dr Pleatman for the ground cumin suggestion, I will add that for sure next time.

I don't know about fresh coriander though, have to see if supermarkets here carry it, could I just grind up a touch of dried coriander and sprinkle that on?

I am going to make it again as soon as I finish with the chicken vegeatable soup I made - it is very good too, but have had to pick out the corn in it as I realize that may be hard on the tummy this early out.

anybody interested in that recipe? can be made without corn!

Cheers,

Donna

Corn also has a high glycemic index, is a pretty starchy food, so is often discouraged in weight loss programs. Same goes for peas. One of my favorite corn products USED TO BE (PRE SLEEVE) Fritos Corn chips. I could eat a whole bag. Can't eat just one. I won't be eating those any more!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
