What are some learned tricks of the trade for head hunger? I do really well all day until the family sits down for dinner. Then the head hunger goes crazy!! All day long I am fine but come dinner time I would love to cheat and dig into a piece of chicken ( not there yet) Please help I don't want to just avoid dinner time all together- that is one of the few times everyone is all together.( I have two teenage children who stay on the move!)

One suggestion would be to prepare yourself some home made chicken broth Soup and have that as your meal while you socialize with your family. Here's the recipe I use which I got from Gaby at Dr Aceves's office. ( I added a few spices of my own).

Cut up a chicken, boil for about 2 hours. Then add 1 cup of chopped carrots, 1 cup of chopped onions, 1 cup of chopped celery, 1 cup of chopped tomatoes, 1/2 cup of finely chopped cilantro, 1 tsp of ground cumin, 1 tsp of red curry powder (not hot kind), sea salt to taste. Simmer for 1 hour. Let cool, then strain the liquid out with a very fine strainer to remove all particles. Refrigerate this broth overnight then skim all the fat off after it has solidified on top. Voila, great broth. You can freeze it in ice cube trays or other containers. If you leave fat in it you may have diarrhea.

Debone the chicken completely once it is cooled, and place the meat and all the cooked veggies in a blender. Add a small amount of the broth and you can make a delicious, high Protein Mushy (or soupy) meal, depending on how much liquid you add.

Be sure you remove ALL of the tiny bones...I used gloves to remove all the bones I could feel by mushing it up in my hands, and then used a larger hole strainer to be double sure there were no bones to get caught in my new sleeve. Freeze it if you are not ready for mushies yet.

I did what Cajun suggested, and prepared my Soup or whatever I was eating for dinner and ate at the same time as the rest of the family. I made it more about the social time with my hubby and kids, and less about the food.< /strong>

Its not long till you can join them in eating chicken so just hang on in there ;-)

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
