Hello Amanda,

I am 23 years old, and am in the same position as you. I am getting my surgery on 12/03/2009. The surgery cost $5,000.00 out of pocket. My insurance will not cover my surgery because I do not have any major health issues except for being overweight (like you). I looked into options, and after seeing my boyfriend getting the Lap-Band in Mexico, at a fraction of the cost to get it done in the US, I decided this is the best option for me.

Most people when I tell them I am getting this done in Mexico, cringe at the thought. However, since I have seen pictures, talked to the doctors and hospital coordinator, I am completely comfortable. Also having someone I trust who went there himself helped me a lot.

:cursing: I am on my 1st stage of the whole VSG, i just started to do my research and setting up the appointment for the Seminar. I going to the memorial Hermann hospital in Houston TX with Dr. Davis. I a little scared because I pretty sure my insurance wont cover me. I 20 years old and 223 pounds i don't have any real health issues besides the fact that I'm over weight. Both my parents had gastric bypass done last year and look great I also now better understand what kind of diet you have to stick to before and after, that's why i know i can make this life change. I know the bypass is not for me. My two brother are also over weight and i have a family history of "chubby" people in my family. I'm just scared because I'm still in college and in order to have this surgery I'm going to have to pick a huge bill. but i think that because i am still young and have my whole life to live that there is no better time to get the VSG done. I have a few Q: if anyone can just take the time and tell their story.

#1 - how much did you pay for the VSG?

#2 - is there anyone about the same age as me that has had it done?

#3- any advise, comments, concerns

Thanks soo much Amanda

Well Amanda, they say 30 is the new 20, so that'll make me 21..lol..I was sleeve oct 6 by Dr. Almanza is Tijuana Mexico for $5000.00. i'm 2 weeks post op ans 26 pounds down. Check out my site to follow my progress.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
