I am having the sleeve gastrectomy Sept. 28. But after reading the posts about post op diets and hunger I got discouraged. I want to be able to control what I eat but will I ever be able to eat a peice of fried chicken again? I mean 1 pc. but don't think I can perm. give up everything. BMI is 42 and I have alot of muscle. I want to lose about 60 lbs. but am discouraged about keeping it off. I am on the 2 wk. liquid diet, 1 wk into it, and I have felt like I am starving the whole time except for when I ate cottage cheese. My stomach aches like a tooth ache and I can't find anyone to talk to who has had it done. I hope I am not doing the surgery for nothing. I have a very hard time losing bec. my metab. is so slow. Will I even lose after this? I can't go on like this feeling starved for too long. Please tell me it gets better. I have lost 4 lbs. and I am sure some is Fluid bec. I took fluid pills. What is the recomended calories a day post op to lose and keep it off?:svengo:

You will lose weight and you won't be as hungry. the hormone that makes hunger is removed along with that part of the stomach. Most people have to try to remember to eat after surgery. don't worry. everyone loses with the sleeve!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I really need it. It seems to me people are still struggling with their weight and I'm doing that already without surgery. I am worried bec. my husband will be very upset if I spend the cash to have surgery and it doesn't help. He thinks "why not just do the diet without the surgery?" I replied, sure, just go on this easy liquid diet with me for 2 wks. If I lose alot I won't get the surgery and you will lose too." He made it thru ONE shake. It blows my mind how men can be sometimes. But alot of people are still doing 700=800 cal. diets WITH the sleeve and I am not sure I can commit to that type of restriction.

I can eat a piece of fried chicken. I take the skin off but that's because I don't like it. :svengo: How many calories you get post-op once you are done losing is really going to vary. I workout about 10 hours a week and I can eat about 2000 calories a day. My metabolism is slightly slower than average according to a test I took. But other people can only eat 1000-1200. Most that I see are eating around 1500-1700 though.

But the thing is, you will be satisfied with that amount. You can be satisfied with very few calories post-op. That's why WLS works 75-90% of the time and diets work 1-5% of the time.

Honestly, the sleeve makes it easy. I ate dinner at 6pm and it's past 11 pm and I am still full. There is no way I am the least bit hungry. In the past, I would be looking for something to snack on all evening long.

I am 4 weeks out and can't imagine returning to eating large amounts. I also panicked before surgery thinking "How can I do this surgery and deal with liquids the first several weeks when I can?t do it now?" and ?How can I live on restricted food for the rest of my life? Can I survive??

Trust me after surgery you won't want it. Your brain is driven by your hunger hormones and when that is gone it is easier to deal with a smaller diet. I still have ?head? hunger sometimes but it does not drive me like it did before. I can ignore it. Two bites is ok because I am full. My brain shuts off the desire to eat and I am done. I can?t believe the amount of food I see people consume. Some times it makes my stomach upset now. As far as chicken goes my tastes have changed. I don?t want anything sweet or fatty. I need Protein and that is what drives my desires.

Hi, I am 4 months out and just returned from 2 weeks in Panama on holiday. I had a blast, ate what I wanted and drank loads of cocktails. I could not overeat though, but I had plenty and did not feel stinted. Came back and found I had lost 4lbs in those 2 weeks!! This really is the answer for classic volume eaters. Don't be put off by the pre-op diet, I found that really horrible too. I was so much better after the op when all had settled down, about 2 months out.

Hope this helps.

Jane, sounds like you had a great holiday and especially with the cocktails. I wanted to ask, were you able to drink all of a drink or sip sip sip? When you drank did it settle in your stomach or upset it? I am curious about the drinking since seems definitely an occasional treat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
