When you did your pre-op high Protein, low carb diet, what types of foods did you eat? I know meat, but did you stick to lower fat choices like chicken and fish, or did you eat beef and pork also? Does it matter as long as it is high protein? I have done Atkins before but wanted to see if eating lower fat made any difference. Thanks for your help.

Hi again :scared0:

Did you feel odd when you did Atkins? I don't and I'm wondering if I should get some of those strips that detect ketones. I've not lost a pound. Possibly due to high fat?

I get all weirded out if I think I'm not going to have anything to eat at work -and we have a candy machine so it's dangerous- so I've been making up a ton of lunches and Snacks the last few days. I can post them if you like.

OK - I have been on the high protein/low carb pre-op diet for 5 days now. Second day I had a killer headache all day - apparently very common due to withdrawal of sugar/starch. I have tried really hard to stay under 30 carbs/day but one day, a banana (26 carbs!!! - who knew) did me in. I haven't been stressing about any weight loss because that is not the point. The point is to get our large messy fatty livers to shrink up some to keep out of the way of the instruments and to become 'tougher' and less likely to bleed if brushed against during surgery.

I still crave carbs but not as often (only 12 hrs/day instead of 24)! My biggest problem is getting the bowels to work - I don't eat raw veggies as they make my guts spasm so it is hard to get in enough fibre.

Foods that I eat:

Skinless BBQ chicken breast with 1 tbsp BBQ Sauce

Meatballs

BBQ steak with 1 tbsp BBQ sauce

Aitkins RTD shakes

Deviled eggs (yum)

cheese strings

Cheddar cheese

Chicken wings (no beer :))

Cheese slice with Peanut Butter

1% milk

Bacon

Green Beans

Raspberries

1 evil banana

By my scale, I have lost 7 lbs. - a bonus for sure.

Good luck!

Thanks Vegas - I bought some of the chewable fibre tablets - just have to remember to take it and drink lots of Water so that it doesn't turn to concrete! Isn't life great! :svengo:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
